Berkadia is seeking a Director – Lending Insurance Risk to provide expert guidance on complex insurance matters across underwriting, mortgage banking, and closing teams. This role emphasizes strategic risk management, agency compliance, and consultative problem solving for high-complexity transactions.

The ideal candidate will partner with multiple departments to balance risk, borrower experience, and transaction execution while developing internal guidance and best practices in CRE insurance

Qualifications

• 8–15+ years in commercial real estate insurance, risk management, or related field.
• Experience evaluating CRE insurance programs for multifamily or commercial assets.
• Familiarity with Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, GSE or agency lending requirements.
• Proven ability to advise senior stakeholders on complex insurance risk and compliance.

Responsibilities

• Serve as senior internal advisor on complex CRE insurance matters for multifamily lending transactions.
• Assess coverage, structure, deductibles, endorsements, and carrier strength.
• Advise underwriting on insurance-related risk decisions for centrally underwritten deals.
• Guide Mortgage Banking teams on insurance decisions for Freddie Mac-conventional loans.
• Interpret agency insurance requirements and communicate risks to stakeholders.
• Lead resolution of escalated insurance issues and provide guidance to deal teams.

The Director – Lending Insurance Risk is a subject-matter expert responsible for advising Berkadia’s Underwriting, Mortgage Banking, and Closing teams on complex insurance matters affecting multifamily lending transactions. The role provides strategic guidance on insurance risk, agency compliance, coverage structure, consultant recommendations, and escalated transaction issues. The Director – Lending Insurance Risk will operate through a consultative, triage-based model focused on higher-complexity matters.

Responsibilities

• Serve as Berkadia’s senior internal advisor on complex commercial real estate insurance matters for multifamily lending transactions.
• Assess insurance coverage, policy structure, deductibles, retentions, exclusions, endorsements, carrier strength, and risk-transfer considerations.
• Advise Underwriting on insurance-related risk decisions for centrally underwritten transactions.
• Advise Mortgage Banking teams on insurance-related risk decisions for Mortgage Banking-underwritten transactions, including Freddie Mac Conventional loans.
• Interpret and apply Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and other applicable agency insurance requirements.
• Review insurance consultant analyses and recommendations; communicate the resulting risks, requirements, and recommended actions to internal stakeholders.
• Provide practical, business-focused guidance to borrowers, brokers, and deal teams when complex insurance requirements require clarification or resolution.
• Lead resolution of escalated insurance issues, including waiver considerations, nonstandard coverage structures, carrier concerns, and agency compliance questions.
• Partner with Underwriting, Mortgage Banking, Closing, Legal, Loan Servicing, and external consultants to support timely and risk-informed transaction decisions.
• Develop and maintain internal guidance, best practices, training materials, and reference resources related to commercial real estate insurance risk.
• Monitor changes in agency requirements, insurance market conditions, and relevant industry practices that may affect Berkadia’s lending platform.
• Exercise sound commercial judgment to balance risk mitigation, agency compliance, borrower experience, and transaction execution.
• Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

• 8–15+ years of progressively responsible experience in commercial real estate insurance, risk management, insurance consulting, commercial mortgage lending, or a related field.
• Significant experience evaluating commercial property and casualty insurance programs for multifamily or other commercial real estate assets.
• Experience with Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, GSE, agency, or institutional commercial real estate lending requirements.
• Demonstrated experience advising senior stakeholders on complex insurance risk, coverage, and compliance matters.
