Job description

Director of Learning & Development

The Director of Learning and Development drives the strategic plan and life cycle of Technology Learning and Development programs, ranging from small-scale, single-module implementations to large-scale program initiatives. In this role, the Director of Learning and Development supports as a people leader, a coach, and embodies being a change champion for learning and technology initiatives. This individual leverages adult learning expertise and ensures learning solution goals are realized in instructional design and planned deliverables. Through collaboration and close relationships with clients, business leaders, subject matter experts, learning and development team members, and others, this individual will drive program design, development, delivery, and adoption by socializing the purpose, value, and alignment with business objectives. The Director of Learning and Development will provide oversight, design, and develop learning content across multiple modalities to support technical training curricula. The Director of Learning and Development will collaborate with other team leaders. Together, they will define learning solutions and program approaches and implement sustainable adult learning practices, including methodologies, standards, processes, and tools. This role reports to and will take daily direction from the Senior Director of Learning and Development Strategy.

Responsibilities
  • Partner with the Senior Director of Learning and Development Strategy and program leads to bring the program learning strategy to life and ensure consistency across the portfolio.
  • Partner with the Senior Director of Learning and Development Strategy to define program scope, goals, budget, milestone timelines, resources, and implementation approaches.
  • Manage small to large-scale programs, curricula, and course life cycles focusing on SOW criteria and, more narrowly, leading the project team, managing timelines, driving quality assurance, escalating risks/issues for collaborative resolution with leadership, and tracking and reporting on milestones.
  • Identify and assess current and future learning and development needs through job and career path analysis, audience surveys, evaluation data, performance results, and consultation with Managers and Leadership.
  • Embody Servant Leadership daily while managing the day-to-day work of learning and development team members and, more narrowly, provide direction, quality oversight, and coaching to team members on key responsibilities, ensuring the timeliness and integrity of materials, in addition to supporting professional growth and development.
  • Serve as a liaison for design, development, and continuous improvement inquiries and consultations with the client, business stakeholders, subject matter experts, and trainers.
  • In alignment with the program evaluation strategy, determine learning metrics for mid-to-larger scale curricula and courses, and ensure effective design and implementation of required performance assessment instruments.
  • Monitor, assess, and report on a program’s effectiveness, success, and ROI; use metrics as benchmarks and offer evidence of the effectiveness of the training and organizational change.
  • Design, develop, and deliver creative learning solutions per statements of work – based on adult learning principles – that ensure effective and sustainable learning and performance outcomes.
  • Engage in significant collaboration with lead trainers and facilitators to drive instructional readiness and provide best-in-class training implementation and facilitation strategies for tough logistical challenges across programs.
  • Demonstrate the unique ability to gain trust and respect in a short time from a highly diverse audience and team.
  • Identify process improvement opportunities, provide recommendations, develop integration plans, and drive supporting change management.
  • Support all instructional materials and develop an understanding of foundational and emergent technical and business processes and standards.
  • Represent the evolving discipline and diversity of adult learning captured in the learning strategy
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Adult Learning, Instructional Design, or related area of study
  • 3-5+ years of experience developing and implementing strategy and leading the work of adult learning professionals
  • 5-7+ years of experience managing or providing oversight to mid-to-large scale adult learning programs/ projects
  • 8-10+ years experience as an Instructional Designer, Learning Consultant, or Learning Specialist
  • Extensive experience providing oversight, designing, and developing technical learning solutions, which include but are not limited to equipment setup, completing workflow systems, and troubleshooting issues
  • Strong knowledge of instructional design tools, adult learning theories, methodologies, and approaches, such as SAM, the ADDIE Model, the Critical Events Model, the Competency-Based Model, and others, in addition to proven experience championing related recommendations, developing integration plans, and spearheading the adoption
  • Strong process background
  • Experience managing matrix reporting relationships
  • Strong life cycle/ project management skills; formal project management training preferred
  • A strategic thinker and problem solver with the ability to quickly assess and summarize information and effectively identify issues or risks, problem solve, and integrate potential resolutions
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
  • Highly self-motivated and directed; “roll your sleeves up,” “can do” attitude
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including instructional and presentation skills
  • A track record of incorporating the following key behaviors into day-to-day efforts: team-approach, effective listening, developing credibility, building trust, demonstrating reliability, client-driven, future-focused, innovative and curious
  • Expert proficiency in MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Excel
  • Knowledge of and experience with learning development tools such as Articulate Studio, Storyline, Camtasia, and Vyond
  • Expert proficiency with project management tools such as MS Project or Smartsheet
  • Ability to travel up to 25% time across the US and Canada (valid passport required)
