McGraw Hill, a leader in digital and print educational solutions, is seeking a Director, Instructional Design to help shape the future of education by creating best-in-class digital teaching and learning experiences. The Director is responsible for collaborating across our academic design, product management, creative design, and technology teams to develop and deliver effective and engaging teaching and learning experiences.

As a leader, you will catalyze transformation of our instructional design practice by connecting our ecosystem of instructional models, content, digital tools, and educator supports that empower teachers and engage students. Reporting to the Senior Director of Learning Architecture & Instructional Design, you will oversee a team of Instructional Designers and collaborate within our product system, optimizing digital content and supports across our experience systems. You will need excellent problem-solving, collaboration, facilitation, and communication skills.

This position can work remotely within the United States.

What You'll do:

  • Digital Content Delivery: Develop and deliver flexible, accessible, engaging, effective, and modular digital content, following research-based best practices and partnering with Content Academic Design and Learning Architecture teams.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Content Academic Design, Product, Marketing, UX, and Engineering teams to define key problems and co-create research-driven learning experiences, employing quality assurance and continuous improvement.

  • Find & Hire the Right People: Define roles, assemble a team dedicated to creating impactful learning experiences, and mentor team members to support innovation and align with product strategy.

  • Change Champion: Motivate and guide teams and partners to adopt new processes and systems, communicating vision and managing resistance to foster a culture of continuous improvement.

  • Data-Driven Improvement: Develop metrics to evaluate content effectiveness and inform iterative improvements across the learning ecosystem.

What you will bring to the role:

  • Instructional Design Expertise: Match instructional goals with digital activities, conduct research analyses, and apply instructional theories. Ability to quickly produce prototypes and understand trade-offs.

  • Production & Tooling Expertise: Mastery of tools and workflows for digital learning content creation, guiding teams and vendors to scale production effectively.

  • Pedagogical Understanding: Deep knowledge of pedagogical approaches, translating them into effective digital experiences, and using models like SAMR for decision-making.

  • Content Innovation & AI Integration: Champion emerging technologies, especially AI, to evolve content creation, adaptation, and personalization at scale.

  • Leadership Qualities: Strong communication and leadership skills, capable of building support and ensuring effective team collaboration and timely delivery.

  • Business and Financial Acumen: Understanding how instructional design creates business value, developing business cases, and managing vendor contracts.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • 7+ years in product development, with 5+ in leadership roles.
  • Experience managing vendors and third-party relationships.
  • Ed tech experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of CMS, authoring, and LMS tools.
  • Proven ability to influence and negotiate.
  • Familiarity with agile development.
