Position Overview:
The Director of Individual Giving leads a team of staff to build a pipeline of individual donors engaged in a variety of individual giving activities including but not limited to: direct response, mid-level giving, major giving, planned giving, and signature events. The Director of Individual Giving oversees the creation and implementation of an overall and integrated individual gifts strategy, manages and mentors staff responsible for functional areas of individual giving, and determines priorities for and between individual giving activities and audiences.

The position will report to the Chief Philanthropy Officer and manages a team of individual giving focused staff including: Associate Director of Annual Fund and Major and Planned Giving Officer. The Director of Individual Giving works in tandem with the Director of Events and the Chief Philanthropy Officer to ensure strategic achievement of SFAF fundraising goals, and collaborates with the philanthropy team, program staff, finance staff, and marketing and communications to identify new Individual giving strategies, develop and disseminate compelling message materials, steward and engage individual donors, and stay abreast of anticipated fundable projects.

Essential Duties:

• Leading and managing all aspects of the Individual Giving Revenue for SFAF, including: annual fund, major gifts and planned giving.
• Assisting with the growth and implementation of new strategies for growth in Individual Giving.
• Managing a portfolio of 125 donors, including current and prospects, primarily from the former AIDS/LifeCycle Ride that is ending after June 2025 after 30 years.
• Work with Major and Planned Giving Officer to develop goals, plans and opportunities for major donors and portfolios.
• Work closely with Chief Philanthropy Officer and the CEO to engage major donors and familiarize them with scope of SFAF programs and activities.
• Build and oversee individual and fundraising communications strategy, including the annual fund direct mail program, major donor communications plan, digital acquisition tactics and more.
• Work with Associate Director, Annual Fund to grow our Sustainer program and develop a Mid-Level giving program.

Other Responsibilities:

• Represent SFAF and its programs in meetings, phone conversations and at events with individual donors and prospective donors.
• Hire, manage and motivate members of the Individual Giving team providing coaching and support to ensure direct response, mid and major gift and planned giving targets are met.
• Guide staff in solicitation efforts, audience selection/list segmentation, and donor relations.
• Monitor and track revenue and expense performance of assigned programs. Make recommendations for program and budget adjustments as necessary.
• Partner with the Director of Events to maximize corporate sponsorship of SFAF events and engagement of ERG groups and partner employees.
• Develop long-term growth plan for individual giving including acquisition, renewal, and upgrade.
• Develop and implement close and productive working relationship with marketing and communications, programs, finance and IT.
• Create and implement effective inter-departmental communications to report, coordinate and track solicitations and donations.
• Work closely with the Donor Services and Salesforce Administrator to ensure effective database tracking, gift acknowledgement, donor services, and accounting policies.

Essential Qualifications:

• Interpersonal Skills: Self-directed, performance-oriented individual who has demonstrated initiative and achievement of goals. Best-practices in individual giving, especially Major Giving.
• Communication Skills: Exceptional verbal and written communications skills. Demonstrated ability to write and edit persuasive materials including successful solicitation and stewardship materials and other collateral.
• Reporting: Proficiency in reporting, monitoring and updating program budgets, conducting background research, analyzing donor prospects, and crafting engagement strategies.
• Management/Leadership Skills: Displays strategic thinking, problem solving and decision-making abilities, mentoring and coaching proficiency, and relationship building skills.
• Software Skills: High level of proficiency in Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), and experience with constituent relationship management (CRM) systems (e.g., Salesforce, Blackbaud or similar).
• Organizational Skills: Excellent organizational skills; ability to effectively coordinate and prioritize workload.

Education and Experience:

• High School diploma or equivalent;
• Minimum of 8 years of work in Individual Giving, Annual Funds and Major Gifts in a non-profit setting required, including leading a team of fundraising professionals;
• Experience working with priority populations served by SFAF is highly regarded:

• Gay, bi and queer men
• Trans and gender non-binary people
• People who inject drugs

Work Environment:

• This is a hybrid position, the position may choose to work remotely up to approximately 3 days per week with requirements to work on-site at our headquarters in San Francisco 2 days a week, and/or travel to other locations as determined in the sole discretion of SFAF.
• Travel expenses for commuting to SFAF offices are not reimbursable.
• Will require evening and weekend work.
