Director, HEOR, MEDICAL COMMUNICATIONS

Our global team of experts — many with PhD and PharmD degrees — work strategically alongside our client partners in Medical Affairs, Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR), Market Access, and Commercial teams across a wide range of therapy areas.

The Director, HEOR, in Medical Communications is responsible for leading a team of HEOR writers to create and deliver high-quality and timely HEOR value communications projects for assigned accounts while also supporting new business development efforts. The Director, HEOR, works both independently and in a team structure. They must be adept at high-profile client and faculty interactions. The Director, HEOR, will also provide high-level input and guidance to clients and to internal account teams around real-world evidence (RWE), health economic analysis, and/or market access communications strategies and tactics.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide HEOR writing and strategic value communications leadership, working with multidisciplinary teams (including medical, editorial, and account personnel), to produce high-quality RWE and HEOR-focused writing and strategy projects (e.g., abstracts, posters, manuscripts, standalone plain language summaries, MSL/HOL reactive/proactive slide decks, AMCP and Global Value Dossiers, gap analyses, scientific platforms, publication planning deliverables, communications, etc.) for assigned accounts
  • Clearly communicate content needs to Medical Directors, Medical Writers, and HEOR Writers and concept needs to Graphic Designers and Medical Strategy partners
  • Provide high-level communications strategic guidance to clients and to internal account teams for targeting unmet needs and product value messaging to patients, providers, payers, and/or policy makers via RWE, health economic analysis, and/or market access related writing projects
  • Partner with Account Leads (SVP/VP, Client Services) to evaluate opportunities for HEOR team support to drive organic growth within existing business
  • Review, provide feedback, and approve all HEOR content developed by direct reports and ensure the highest level of quality for client deliverables
  • Train, mentor, and provide frequent feedback for HEOR staff writers and ensure contract HEOR writers meet OPEN Health’s standards for quality and timeliness
  • Manage all HEOR Writer resourcing planning and project writing needs for assigned accounts
  • Work closely with Client Services teams to assess and ensure profitability of the HEOR function through optimized processes/procedures, resourcing, and workflow efficiencies
  • Conduct annual reviews/performance planning/formal feedback and career planning for direct reports

Experience, Skills, and Qualifications

  • MD, PharmD, PhD, MS, MA, MPH, or other advanced degree in Health Economics, Health Services Research, Outcomes Research, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Public Health, or other comparable areas
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of HEOR narrative writing to ensure effective scientific and value communications that resonate with clinical, payer, and patient audiences
  • 5 years of HEOR/RWE writing and strategic value communications experience in a medical communications company, HEOR agency, and/or pharmaceutical/biotechnology company
  • Skilled in the creation of high-quality, comprehensive, and succinct therapeutic area unmet need and product value messaging relevant to diverse target audiences and stakeholders
  • Experienced in content development and submissions to both HEOR and clinical/medical conferences and journals
  • Understanding of the changing payer/HTA/policy landscape in the U.S. (e.g., value frameworks like ICER and ASCO) and globally (HTA Agencies like NICE in the UK and IQWIG in Germany), as well as key regulatory programs and initiatives impacting the field (e.g., CMS Inflation Reduction Act [IRA], FDA 21st Century Cures Act Real-World Evidence Program, etc.)
  • Strategic communications skills in the areas of value, affordability, evidence generation, market access, formulary decision making, and reimbursement
  • Ability to read and interpret statistical analysis plans (SAPs), SAS (or other statistical software) output, modeling software output (e.g., decision analysis, Markov models), and other specialized methods (e.g., Rasch analysis, discrete choice experiment)
  • A thorough understanding of HEOR/RWE study (e.g., claims and EHR database studies, cross-sectional surveys) and modeling methodologies (e.g., budget impact models and cost-effectiveness models) and how to effectively articulate and communicate them to diverse target audiences
  • Superior HEOR technical writing skills and a deep-rooted passion for writing and communications in general
  • Familiarity with pharmaceutical marketing and drug commercialization
  • Strong leadership and decision-making skills and competencies
  • Forward-thinking mindset that embraces change and strives to enhance the reach and impact of our work
