This position is remote, based out of the New York metropolitan area. Traveling to New York City 1-3 times per week is required.

The Highlights

IGH advocates for an inclusive global definition of homelessness, standardized global measurement, and comprehensive policies and programs to effectively address homelessness. The Global Policy and Advocacy Director is responsible for strategy development, relationship building, coalition management, and daily operations of this IGH program area. The role includes managing activities outlined within IGH’s Memorandum of Understanding with UN-Habitat. The director must be based within commuting distance of New York City and work closely with all professional staff, the IGH Advisory Committee, and external partners.

Founded in 2014, the George and Tanya Ruff Institute of Global Homelessness (IGH) is an initiative of DePaul University, based in Chicago, USA. IGH focuses solely on ending street homelessness globally by bridging research, policy, and practice.

What You'll Do
Strategy Implementation and Partnership Development
  • Serve as the primary liaison to the UN NGO Working Group to End Homelessness (WGEH).
  • Coordinate with UN-Habitat on joint MOU activities.
  • Develop relationships with national statistics offices and international statistical groups like the UN Statistical Commission.
  • Build relationships with UN Member State delegations and other multilateral institutions.
  • Expand IGH's participation in advocacy coalitions and serve as liaison for external partnerships.
  • Collaborate with the Vanguard Program Director to highlight Vanguard communities in global forums and support local advocacy.
  • Create and share advocacy resources and materials.
Strategy Development, Planning, and Administration
  • Work with the Executive Director and Advisory Committee to expand IGH’s global partnerships and policy influence.
  • Provide regular program updates and strategic insights to the Advisory Committee.
  • Monitor the program budget annually.
  • Participate in fundraising efforts, including grant writing and donor reports.
Organizational Duties
  • Participate actively in the IGH team, including planning and meetings.
  • Serve as a thought partner to the Executive Director.
  • Represent IGH in forums and working groups.
  • Maintain accurate records of contacts and conversations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
What You'll Need
  • At least 7 years of professional experience.
  • At least 4 years managing advocacy, partnerships, or communications.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent preferred.
  • Second language skills preferred.
  • Lived experience of homelessness is a plus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft and Google suites, and video conferencing tools.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience working with diverse cultures and contexts.
  • Self-management skills and independent judgment.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to IGH’s values, including anti-racism and asset-based community development.
  • Willingness to travel internationally as needed.
Salary Range

Estimated annual salary: $56,222 - $85,000, dependent on experience and education.
