Job summary

Berkeley Lab invites applications for the Director of the NERSC Division, the premier DOE Office of Science HPC facility. You will lead scientific computing, data services, and user support for thousands of researchers and dozens of projects, directing strategy, operations, and budget.

You will shape the long-range roadmap, advance AI for science, strengthen cybersecurity and safety, and cultivate a diverse, world-class workforce in a collaborative, mission-driven environment at a national lab.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. or equivalent in computational science or related field.
• Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible leadership experience in HPC, data science, AI, or related field.
• Proven success developing and implementing visionary strategies.
• Experience leading large-scale technical organizations and managing substantial resources.
• Commitment to stewardship, safety, integrity, and collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Provide scientific, technical, and operational leadership for NERSC.
• Develop and execute a long-term strategic vision and roadmap for NERSC.
• Lead initiatives in AI, complex workflows, software development, and new architectures (e.g., quantum).
• Guide policies and programs to strengthen Berkeley Lab's scientific leadership.
• Engage with sponsors, user communities, and stakeholders to align services with research needs.
• Represent NERSC and Berkeley Lab with federal agencies, academia, industry, and international partners.
