Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, economics, or business administration required.
  • 7+ years in enterprise risk, compliance risk, operational risk, or related quantitative discipline within financial services.
  • Professional certifications in Risk Management are preferred.
  • Strong analytical, decision-making, and communication skills; translate risk concepts into insights.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain the ERM framework, policies, and procedures.
  • Identify, assess, and monitor enterprise risks across strategic, operational, financial, and regulatory domains.
  • Collaborate with business units to align risk strategies with objectives and risk appetite.
  • Provide risk management training to promote a risk-aware culture.
  • Deliver reports to the CRO and senior leadership on compliance and risk matters.
  • Monitor effectiveness of risk activities and recommend improvements.

Job Description
How will this role impact First Command?

The Director of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing First Command's ERM risk management function. Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President, Chief Risk Officer (CRO), this position plays a critical role in establishing strategy, governance, and enterprise-wide integration of risk management best practices. The ERM team also serves as the primary champion of risk management at strategic levels and will be responsible for building a risk-aware culture that improves decision-making, enhances resilience and the ability to respond to uncertainty, strengthens governance and stakeholder confidence and optimizes operational efficiency.

What will the employee do in this role?
  • Develop, implement, and maintain the ERM framework, policies, and procedures.
  • Identify, assess, and monitor enterprise risks, including strategic, operational, financial, and regulatory risks.
  • Collaborate with business units to align risk management strategies with business objectives and risk appetite.
  • Provide risk management advice and training to business units to promote a risk-aware culture.
  • Prepare and deliver regular reports to the CRO and senior leadership on compliance and operational risk matters.
  • Monitor and report on the effectiveness of risk management activities and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements related to risk management.
  • Lead risk assessment and scenario analysis exercises.
  • Assist the CRO with external stakeholders, including regulators and auditors, on risk management matters.
  • Serve as a key advisor to the CRO on trend spotting, emerging enterprise risks, regulatory changes, and mitigation strategies.
  • Support the CRO in maintaining a strong risk governance structure, including representing risk management on various committees and working groups.
  • Support the CRO with the development and delivery of training programs to promote a strong risk and compliance culture across the organization to ensure employees understand their role in managing compliance and operational risk.
  • Provide subject matter expertise during product development, process changes, and strategic initiatives.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of enterprise risk professionals by setting clear objectives, providing continuous feedback, supporting professional growth, and fostering collaboration across risk and control functions.

What skills and qualifications does this employee need?
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, Economics, Business Administration, or related field required.
  • Master's degree preferred.
Work Experience
  • 7+ years or more of experience in enterprise risk, compliance risk, operational risk, or a related quantitative discipline within financial services required.
Certifications
  • Professional certifications in Risk Management are preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
  • Extensive knowledge of risk management principles and practices, and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong analytical, decision-making, and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex risk concepts into actionable insights.
  • Highly effective in building relationships with senior business leaders and in leading a team in a collaborative and value-added approach.
  • Deep understanding of financial markets, regulatory frameworks, and enterprise risk management methodologies.
  • Must be a self-starter capable of using sound logic and analytical abilities to accurately complete all required job functions.
  • Must have effective project management skills.
  • High level of integrity and professional ethics.
  • Must use sound judgment in handling confidential and/or sensitive information.
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office365, risk management software and other related IT systems.
