Job Summary
The Director, Enterprise Data Platform leads a core engineering team that designs, builds, and operates the medallion data lake that serves as the foundation for Surescripts’ entire data product ecosystem. The role oversees the end‑to‑end data pipeline infrastructure on Google BigQuery, ensuring clean, reliable data for internal consumers, external partners, and AI systems. The Director works alongside peers in Data Product Delivery, Architecture, Platform Engineering, and Trust & Enablement, and reports directly to the VP of Enterprise Data Platform.
Responsibilities
- Build and operate the medallion data lake (Raw, Silver, Gold layers) using Google BigQuery.
- Define ingestion, conformance, cleansing, and downstream availability standards; document and govern all layers.
- Lead, mentor, and grow a high‑performing team of data engineers focused on cloud data platforms, pipeline development, and data modeling.
- Drive source system onboarding: define data contracts, enforce SLAs, build resilient, observable ingestion pipelines, and manage data freshness, completeness, and availability commitments.
- Collaborate with Architecture and Semantic Intelligence to ensure Gold layer data models align with canonical specifications.
- Own cost efficiency: manage BigQuery compute and storage, optimize queries, partitioning strategies, and materialized views to improve platform economics.
- Build observability and alerting infrastructure to detect and resolve pipeline failures proactively.
- Contribute to Enterprise Data Platform strategy, participating in senior leadership discussions and executive reporting.
Fundamental Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, information systems, or related technical field.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in data engineering, cloud engineering, data infrastructure, or distributed systems.
- 5+ years of leadership experience managing engineering teams on large‑scale enterprise platforms.
- Strong background in designing and operating cloud‑native platforms, preferably on Google Cloud Platform.
- Experience implementing medallion or multi‑layer data lake architectures at enterprise scale.
- Expertise with infrastructure‑as‑code, CI/CD, observability, automation, and platform operations.
- Proficient with SQL‑based transformation patterns and orchestration tools such as Cloud Composer/ Airflow.
- Experience defining and enforcing data contracts, SLAs, and quality standards across complex, multi‑source environments.
- Knowledge of platform security controls, identity integration, tokenization, secrets management, and secure data access patterns.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and stakeholder‑management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in computer science, engineering, business administration, or related field.
- Experience in healthcare, life sciences, or highly regulated industries.
- Familiarity with BigQuery, Airflow, Looker, Terraform, and modern observability platforms.
- Experience supporting synthetic data, metadata management, and data trust frameworks.
Benefits
- Base salary range: $216,200 – $264,200 per year (variable provision).
