Job Description

The Director, Engineering, reporting to the office leader, will manage, mentor, develop, and collectively lead a diverse team of process, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and automation engineers. The Director will display a high level of energy and drive, thrive under pressure, demonstrate a high level of personal and business integrity, a strong business acumen, and excellent interpersonal skills.

The Director will coordinate closely with the Office Leader and their design and construction leadership counterparts, including Directors, Group Leads, Project Directors, and other Northeast Regional Leadership.

The core responsibilities of the Director include discipline leadership and people management, which is estimated at 15% of the position’s time. Based on personal expertise, additional responsibilities may include project discipline lead, project management, and/or business development. Billable project work is expected to comprise 60% - 75% of the role, depending on business development duties.

Responsibilities

Discipline Leadership (Required)

  • Drive development of all facets of the engineering discipline: Process, Mechanical, Plumbing, Electrical, and Automation.
  • Help establish and bolster CRB’s reputation and balanced engineering externally.
  • Provide input on project delivery methods such as Integrated Project Delivery, EPCM, and Design-Bid-Build, focusing on project planning, budgeting, phasing, logistics, and constructability.
  • Collaborate with engineering leaders across regions to share best practices.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement within engineering through design discussions and cross-discipline opportunities.
  • Ensure technical excellence aligns with company goals and impacts.
  • Maintain high-quality project documentation from the discipline to meet client expectations and mitigate construction risks.

People Management (Required)

  • Lead the team by providing meaningful project assignments, career development plans, conflict resolution, and a safe, collaborative environment.
  • Ensure team members have balanced workloads aligned with billability targets through communication with project managers and architectural teams.
  • Make resource assignment decisions, maintain commitments, and prevent overloads or mismatched assignments.
  • Review resource planning reports bi-weekly and communicate updates proactively.
  • Participate in resource planning meetings.
  • Approve timesheets and perform annual goal setting and performance reviews, providing feedback and addressing issues promptly.
  • Determine appropriate staffing levels for long-term workload needs.
  • Lead recruitment efforts and regularly check in with team members to gauge satisfaction and reduce turnover.

Business Development (Optional)

  • Assist in setting and communicating the office's strategic vision and culture.
  • Contribute to annual business planning and strategic goal alignment.
  • Maintain client relationships and participate in business development activities.
  • Develop strategies for project pursuits and represent CRB at industry events.
  • Enhance CRB’s market presence and nurture client relationships with integrity.

Project Management (Optional)

  • Manage projects as a Project Executive, Director, or Senior Project Manager.
  • Oversee staffing, profitability, client satisfaction, and employee experience.
  • Lead project teams including project managers, engineers, and discipline leads.
  • Ensure technical quality and deliver a remarkable client and employee experience.

Project Discipline Lead (Optional)

  • Interface with clients and partners.
  • Plan and direct work, managing budgets from a discipline perspective on complex projects.
  • Collaborate on proposals, scheduling, and scope management.
  • Address site and construction issues, develop construction packages, and oversee quality control.

Qualifications
