Position Summary

The Director, Procurement oversees all direct procurement activities, including sourcing, negotiating, and managing the supply of raw materials, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), excipients, and packaging components. This role is responsible for building strong supplier partnerships, ensuring material availability, and supporting production goals through cost-effective and compliant sourcing strategies. Working closely with supply chain, quality, manufacturing, and finance teams, this role ensures that procurement processes are efficient, scalable, and aligned with Empower’s mission to deliver high-quality, affordable medications.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Leads the end-to-end strategy and execution for direct procurement, including sourcing, negotiation, contracting, and performance management for raw materials, APIs, excipients, and packaging components.
  • Builds and manages strategic supplier relationships to ensure quality, scalability, and cost efficiency, while leading a high-performing procurement team through mentorship, accountability, and collaboration.
  • Collaborates cross-functionally with the enterprise to align procurement strategies with production needs, business goals, and product development timelines.
  • Implements data-driven processes to monitor supplier performance, optimize inventory levels, and manage working capital, leveraging artificial intelligence (AI)-powered analytics for demand forecasting and spend visibility, while owning procurement operations within Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems.
  • Drives continuous improvement in sourcing operations by identifying automation opportunities, enhancing supplier diversity, and supporting technology implementation across procurement workflows.

While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to talk and hear. The employee is often required to remain in a stationary position for a significant amount of the workday and frequently use their hands and fingers to handle or feel in order to access, input, and retrieve information from the computer and other office productivity devices. The employee is regularly required to move about the office and around the corporate campus. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

Knowledge And Skills

  • Strong leadership and cross-functional collaboration skills with experience managing suppliers, contracts, and cost optimization.
  • Proficiency in ERP systems and procurement analytics tools, with experience using AI to improve decision-making and efficiency.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Minimum of 15 years of procurement experience, with at least 5 years managing direct sourcing in a pharmaceutical or regulated manufacturing environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, business administration, or a related field required; Master’s preferred.
  • Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM) preferred; Certified Purchasing Professional (CPP) preferred; Lean Six Sigma certification (LSS) preferred.
