The Director of Digital Audience Growth drives cross-platform strategies to grow, engage, and retain audiences. This role unites editorial, marketing, revenue, and tech teams to deepen engagement with both members and prospects. The ideal candidate is a data-driven, collaborative leader with a passion for journalism and audience growth. Reports to the Senior Director, Audience Development & Marketing

Key Responsibilities

Audience Development Strategy & Leadership

  • Define and implement a comprehensive audience engagement and development strategy aligned with organizational revenue and growth goals.
  • Serve as a key partner in aligning editorial and business priorities, ensuring audience efforts support broader company objectives.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with business, editorial, and tech teams to align initiatives, support content strategy, and optimize newsletter and social media engagement—all while maintaining clear, timely communication with stakeholders.

Analytics & Optimization

  • Leverage tools such as Google Analytics 4 (GA4), CRM data, customer journey mapping, and user surveys to gain a comprehensive understanding of audience behavior, preferences, and pain points.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) across digital platforms, including website, email, social, and other media channels, to identify trends, opportunities, and areas for improvement.
  • Develop and deliver clear, actionable performance reports and dashboards tailored to various internal stakeholders, translating complex data into strategic insights.[AS2]
  • Design and implement A/B and other testing strategies to evaluate creative assets, messaging, user flows, and conversion funnels.
  • Analyze test outcomes and site metrics to optimize content, layout, and targeting, enhancing overall engagement and conversion rates.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with newsroom, marketing and tech teams to translate data insights into tactical and strategic improvements.
  • Stay current on analytics tools, tracking technologies, and data privacy standards to ensure compliance and innovation in performance measurement.

Audience Engagement & Growth

  • Collaborate with editorial teams to develop scalable engagement strategies, such as:
    • User acquisition campaigns
    • Newsletter growth and click-through optimization
    • Lead nurturing and lifecycle communication
  • Leverage SEO best practices and collaborate with content creators to improve organic reach.
  • Manage newsletter strategy with a focus on segmentation, personalization, and performance optimization.
  • Develop and oversee audience tagging/taxonomy processes to improve content targeting and analytics.
Product, Campaign & Partnership Development

  • Collaborate with the business and technology teams on user experience optimization and full-funnel engagement across platforms and products.
  • Support sales and editorial teams in developing promotional campaigns for high-impact content and large-scale newsroom projects.
  • Coordinate with external agencies and vendors to ensure successful campaign execution and platform integration.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.
  • 8+ years in audience development, digital marketing, or media strategy, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • 3–5 years working in a newsroom or journalism-adjacent environment.
  • Proven expertise in analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics, GA4), CRM/database platforms (HubSpot), and content management systems (WordPress).
  • Deep knowledge of SEO, email marketing, and A/B testing practices.
  • Proven ability to communicate data findings into clear, actionable analysis.
  • Strong project management, communication[AS3] [NA4] , and collaboration skills are important.
  • Strategic thinker with a passion for journalism and audience-centric innovation.

Compensation & Benefits

Posted Salary Range: $100,000 – $130,000 annually (commensurate with experience)
