Job description

At Fortis, we lead the way in next generation payment technologies and solutions. We transform payments into a competitive advantage for our clients and partners, enabling businesses to reach uncharted growth and scale. As the solution of choice for the future of payments, Fortis moves payments closer to invisible with a proprietary platform that supports and strengthens the payments capabilities of merchants and software partners. We are a collaborative team of innovators, problem solvers, and builders, committed to the growth of our clients, partners, and team members. Through award winning software integrations, robust data, and industry vertical and commerce expertise, we deliver the ultimate frictionless commerce experiences. We are in hyper growth mode and seeking talented, innovative, and collaborative problem solvers to help us build and scale the future of payments. Grow your career with us and be on the cutting edge of the rapidly expanding FinTech payments space.

FortisPay is a payment technology company processing billions of dollars annually. Our infrastructure organization covers DevOps and platform engineering, security, corporate IT, and production support. We are consolidating a multi-brand estate onto one platform while a major payments migration runs alongside it.

You will lead the DevOps and platform engineering function: the pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, cloud estate, and self-service tooling that will ultimately allow the product teams build, deploy, and run their own services.

The role reports to the VP of AI Platform Operations. You lead a small team of intermediate engineers, manage contract capacity, and hold budget authority for automation and partner resources.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
The platform and the cloud estate
  • CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code (Terraform/Cloudformation), our GitLab DevOps platform, AWS across multiple accounts and brands, Observability, and shared production infrastructure
  • The developer-facing self-service intake. Run it as a product with customers, not a ticket queue
  • Cloud cost and run-the-business spend, with a focus on optimization
  • Production change mechanics: the deployment verification gate, the after-hours policy, and the second-approver boundary that PCI DSS and SOC 2 require
Building the team
  • Lead a small team (two engineers, contract capacity) and grow capability primarily through automation and partner resources
  • Break the concentration risk this function carries. Cross-training, documentation, and redistributing work are year-one objectives
  • Hire, onboard, and manage team, contract and partner engineers against a named budget.
  • Coach engineers who are strong technically and have had little structural support
Governance and standards
  • Install the practices this function lacks: working priorities on the delivery board, blameless postmortems, on-call rotation SOPs, SLOs, and toil measurement. We want SRE as a discipline, not a separate team
  • Set and enforce platform standards. IaC-only changes, least-privilege and just-in-time access, environment consistency
  • Partner with security on guardrails and the approval gate, with corporate IT on access tooling, and with the TPM on program cadence
Programs in flight
  • GitLab consolidation and migration. Live, heavy, and the function's largest commitment
  • Deployment infrastructure for an accelerated platform migration
  • Access control lockdown. All infrastructure into Terraform state
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required
  • 8+ years in infrastructure, DevOps, SRE, or platform engineering, including 3+ years managing engineers directly with hiring and performance responsibility
  • Hands-on AWS at scale (IAM, VPC and networking, ECS or another container platform, Lambda, S3) and Terraform-based infrastructure-as-code. You can review your team's work and unblock it without taking it over
  • Engineering governance you installed where none existed: prioritization, incident and postmortem discipline, on-call rotation, change management
  • Change control in a regulated environment. You understand why a production change needs a second approver, and you automate around that constraint
  • Writing and speaking that holds up with executives. You will represent this function outside the department
Preferred
  • CI/CD platform migration, GitLab in particular
  • PCI DSS or SOC 2 environments. Payments, fintech, or another regulated industry
  • Observability you owned end to end across more than one tool. Metrics, logs, tracing, and alerting, not a single vendor's dashboard
  • AI and agentic tooling used to remove operational work, with a clear view of where it fits and where it does not
  • Managing distributed and contract engineers
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience
