Director, Data Scientist

Lead the Generative AI Systems (Genesis) team within Card Data Science at Capital One. You will build state‑of‑the‑art generative AI solutions for dialogue, text summarization, reading comprehension, speech recognition, image/document processing, and time‑series sequencing. The team delivers internal applications that drive business efficiency and enhances customer‑facing products.

Responsibilities

• Partner with cross‑functional teams of data scientists, software engineers, and product managers to deliver products customers love.
• Leverage a broad stack of technologies—including Python, Kubernetes, AWS, H2O, Spark, and more—to reveal insights hidden within huge volumes of numeric and textual data.
• Build machine learning models through all phases of development, from design through training, evaluation, validation, and implementation.
• Translate complex technical work into tangible business goals.

Basic Qualifications

• Currently holding or in the process of obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in a quantitative field (Statistics, Economics, Operations Research, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related) with 9 years of data analytics experience.
• Or a Master’s Degree in a quantitative field or an MBA with a quantitative concentration with 7 years of data analytics experience.
• Or a PhD in a quantitative field with 4 years of data analytics experience.
• At least 4 years of experience leveraging open‑source programming languages for large‑scale data analysis.
• At least 4 years of experience working with machine learning.
• At least 4 years of experience using relational databases.

Preferred Qualifications

• PhD in STEM with 5 years of data analytics experience.
• At least 1 year of experience working with AWS.
• At least 3 years of experience managing people.
• At least 5 years of experience with Python, Scala, or R for large‑scale data analysis.
• At least 5 years of experience with machine learning.

Salary & Benefits

McLean, VA: $269,100 – $307,200 for Director, Data Science. New York, NY: $293,600 – $335,100 for Director, Data Science. The role is eligible for performance‑based incentive compensation and comprehensive benefits including health, financial and other wellness programs.
