Job Summary/Objectives

As the Data Center Services Practice Lead for NextEdge, the Director Data Centers is the senior level manager who oversees and leads the planning, development, and profitable revenue growth of a new data center services line of business.

  • Working closely with the National Vice President Wireline and Data Centers, support the development of the NextEdge data center services strategy, identifying the market opportunities, prospective customers, and high level objectives for the service line.
  • Act as the management team subject matter expert and advisor in the data center services domain including insight into prospective customers, partnerships, competition, key market drivers and emerging trends, threats, and opportunities. This includes maintaining familiarity with the emerging data center technologies and best practices regarding infrastructure, security, and cloud integration.
  • Data Center Service Offering Development: Develop project based and recurring data center service offerings including service descriptions, customer deliverables, services costing methodology, and services pricing configurator.
  • Data Center Services Team Management and Leadership: Leading and managing a team of data center specialists, including engineers, architects, consultants, and project managers. This includes developing the data center services workforce plan and job descriptions including skills, experience levels, credentials, and other requirements as necessary.
  • Data Center Services Supply Chain Management: Identify, assess, and select qualified data center services suppliers, material and equipment suppliers, specialized tools, software, and training as required.
  • Customer Engagement and Experience Management: Building and maintaining relationships with key clients, understanding their data center needs, and presenting solutions to address them. Serve as the senior customer engagement and relationship management interface for service delivery effectiveness, operational customer communications, reporting, compliance, and overall customer experience management.
  • Sales and Business Development: Identifying potential clients, opportunity leads and directly supporting activities necessary to book orders for data center services. Collaborate closely with senior leadership, business development and sales resources in presenting and positioning the NextEdge data center services value proposition with prospective and current customers, including directly supporting the preparation of services bids & tenders, pricing quotes, and sales presentations to actively support the acquisition of customers and profitable revenues.
  • Project Delivery: Overseeing the implementation and delivery of data center projects, ensuring timely completion and quality standards.
  • Practice level and Project Level Profitability Management: Managing the practice's P&L, optimizing costs, and driving revenue growth.

Primary Responsibilities

  • End-to-end responsibility for data center projects to achieve operational, quality, schedule, safety, and financial goals. Duties include being the primary customer interface, scheduling, resource assignments, status meetings, issues identification and tracking, coordinating sub-contractor work, and task managing shop and fieldwork.
  • Establish and maintain effective communications and a good working relationship with our key customer contacts.
  • Where applicable, manage key staff overseeing elements of project delivery, internal office / warehouse operations, and administration.
  • Establish a working budget and timelines for all projects. Oversee project office financial (revenue, budget) performance.
  • Secure, document, and track commitments from personnel, sub-contractors, other project contractors, and customers that affect the success of the project. When appropriate, escalate issues to Senior Management.
  • Ensure the hire of employees and sub-contractors necessary to complete assigned work. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Generate adequate documentation for all phases of a project, including status reports and job closeout packages where applicable. Present documentation to customer as required.
  • Review and submit all Engineering / Purchasing requisitions
  • Submit, review, and approve weekly / monthly project invoicing and accruals.
  • Review the quality of work on all projects for adherence to the companies’ standards. Take corrective action as appropriate
  • Ensure a safe work environment
  • Oversee management of company owned fleet, equipment, and tools

Minimum Education And Experience

  • Undergraduate degree in business, management, or computer science or the ability to demonstrate equivalent experience and abilities.
  • Familiarity with data center industry physical, cyber, and human practices security requirements, standards, risks, challenges, methods, and expectations for contractors working in data centers and accessing data center systems.
  • Familiarity with high availability indoor fiber and communications infrastructure planning, construction, integration, testing, and methods for troubleshooting, repairing, monitoring and managing indoor communications infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with Outside Plant (OSP) fiber planning, construction, integration, testing, and methods for troubleshooting, repairing, monitoring, and managing OSP infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with inside plant power systems including AC, DC, and Digital Power, and power backup, monitoring, and management systems.
  • Familiarity with data center cooling and environmental management systems.
  • Current knowledge and experience with data center industry worker and workplace safety practices, expectations, personal protective equipment, and related safety requirements specific to pre-construction, construction, and in-operation data centers

Direct/Indirect Supervisory Responsibility

  • Sets goals for performance and deadlines in ways that comply with company and customers plans and objectives.
  • Develops, maintains, and as needed updates Data Center Services workforce policies for managing safety, access, communications and associated workplace compliance requirements.
  • Develops, maintains, and as needed updates Data Center Services training and skills requirements including the selection of materials, courses, and suppliers to provide required training on an as needed basis to ensure managers, employees, and suppliers obtain and maintain the required skills and credentials.
  • Organizes/oversees workflow and ensures that employees understand their duties or delegated tasks.
  • Monitors employee productivity and provides effective and objective feedback and coaching. Provides timely and objective input for employee and supplier performance evaluations.
  • Partners with HR/Legal to address performance issues of employees in accordance with company and where applicable, customer policies.

Work Environment/Physical Demands/Travel Required

  • Remote position, located within the United States
  • Working conditions include both climate controlled indoor and outdoor / unconditioned construction environments.
  • Position may involve extensive walking and standing during travel to, and on-site visits to project work sites.
  • Ability to use hand tools, climb stairs, ladders, and lift boxes up to 30 lbs. in support of project teams on an as-needed basis.
  • Flexibility to work beyond 40 hours per week and weekends during peak project periods.
  • 20-25% of travel including work in field, meeting clients, employees, suppliers, and visiting project locations.
  • Must be willing and able to undergo background and security investigations as may be required by customers and prospective customers as standard practices in the highly secure data center industry.
