Job summary

State of South Carolina's Department of Social Services seeks a Union County Director I to oversee a county DSS office, directing operations, finances, and staff. The role focuses on ensuring safe, effective delivery of child welfare and economic services in alignment with state policies and community needs.

The Director I will lead strategic planning, staff development, and cross-agency collaboration while maintaining regulatory compliance and a strong community presence.

Qualifications

• Master's Degree or higher and three (3) years of experience in any combination of social work, management, business administration, administrative services or public administration.
• Or a Bachelor's Degree and five (5) years of experience in any combination of social work, management, business administration, administrative services or public administration.
• A valid driver's license is required.

Responsibilities

• Directs operations of a County Department of Social Services (DSS) office, overseeing financial operations, personnel practices, and service delivery.
• Fosters a safe, learning-oriented culture and accountability to practice that aligns with the agency's mission and values.
• Collaborates with community partners to access and create services for children, families and adults; conducts CWIT meetings.
• Maintains knowledge of DSS policies; coaches staff in policy application and updates.
• Manages system changes, evaluates processes, and tracks initiatives within the region to improve efficiency and outcomes.
• Reviews county data to inform practice changes; leads weekly/monthly staff meetings to develop improvement plans.
• Leads timely hiring, recruitment and retention efforts; monitors retention patterns and develops strategies.
