Job summary

The Jewish Federation Of Metropolitan Detroit (jfmd) is seeking an Associate Director, Community Relations. You will lead strategic public affairs, manage a broad portfolio of relationships with officials, educators, faith and civic leaders, and guide advocacy and media engagement to advance the Federation’s priorities.

Reporting to the Director of Community Relations, you will translate strategic priorities into defined objectives, oversee day-to-day operations, coordinate cross-team workflows,

Qualifications

• 5+ years of relevant professional experience in community relations, government affairs, public policy, advocacy, or nonprofit leadership.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to convey complex issues clearly.
• Strong political and interpersonal judgment and the ability to operate in fast-paced environments.
• Proven ability to manage multiple projects and relationships simultaneously.
• Capacity to work independently and take ownership of significant areas of responsibility.

Responsibilities

• Serve as strategic partner to the Director of Community Relations in developing and implementing department initiatives.
• Manage a significant portfolio of internal and external relationships, including elected officials and education leaders.
• Maintain and deepen key relationships, identify new partnerships, coordinate meetings and briefings.
• Expand bridge-building with non-Jewish community leaders and new communities.
• Strengthen relationships with journalists and enhance media engagement to contextualize antisemitism and Jewish community issues.
• Help shape Federation messaging to communicate complex topics accurately and persuasively.
• Develop metrics to evaluate program effectiveness and inform strategy.
• Represent the Federation at meetings and public events, and speak publicly when appropriate.
• Take ownership over programs and initiatives within the Community Relations structure.
