Job description

Arhaus was founded in 1986 on a simple idea: Furniture and décor should be sustainably sourced, lovingly made, and built to last. Today, we partner with artisans around the world who share our vision, creating beautiful, heirloom-quality pieces that can be used-and loved for generations.

The Director of Commerce and Marketing Technology is a hands‑on technical leader responsible for the architecture, engineering, and delivery of the company's customer‑facing technology platforms across showrooms, eCommerce, and marketing. This leader owns the technical direction and day‑to‑day health of the enterprise e‑commerce, point‑of‑sale (POS), order management, CRM, loyalty, and marketing technology ecosystems, and is accountable for how those platforms are designed, integrated, built, secured, and supported. The role pairs deep commerce platform and integration architecture expertise with the ability to lead a high‑performing team of internal engineers and external implementation partners. The ideal candidate has a proven track record of delivering large‑scale composable commerce programs, preferably on Shopify Plus, and of turning business strategy into scalable, well‑governed technical solutions in a fast‑paced retail environment.

Technical Leadership & Strategy
  • Define and own the technical vision, roadmap, and target‑state architecture for commerce and marketing technology, aligned to business priorities and enterprise architecture standards.
  • Serve as the senior technical authority for commerce platforms, making and documenting architecture decisions and protecting design integrity across programs and partners.
  • Partner with leaders in eCommerce, Showrooms, Marketing, Client Care, Supply Chain, and Finance to translate business goals into technical plans, sequencing, and investment cases.
  • Build, lead, and develop a high‑performing team of engineers, solution architects, platform owners, and analysts (blend of internal and external resources), setting clear expectations for technical quality, ownership, and accountability.
Commerce Platform Architecture & Engineering
  • Lead the architecture, design, and lifecycle of e‑commerce, POS, OMS, and CRM systems (e.g., Shopify Plus, Shopify POS, Manhattan Active Omni, Salesforce, or similar).
  • Direct the design and build of composable and headless selling experiences using modern frameworks and platform extensibility (e.g., Storefront API, GraphQL Admin API, Shopify Functions, Checkout Extensibility, POS UI extensions, Hydrogen or Next.js).
  • Guide the design of product configuration, pricing, and quoting capabilities that support made‑to‑order and customizable furniture.
  • Drive enhancements in digital merchandising, personalization, payment solutions, and omnichannel integration.
  • Ensure scalability, security, and performance of commerce and marketing platforms, including peak‑season readiness, load testing, and capacity planning.
  • Design and govern integrations between commerce platforms and ERP, WMS, distributed order management, PIM, tax, and payment systems using API‑led and event‑driven patterns.
  • Establish clear system‑of‑record ownership and data contracts for product, price, inventory, customer, and order data so every channel works from consistent information.
  • Ensure accurate real‑time or near‑real‑time inventory visibility, pricing and promotions, and reliable order, payment, and refund flows across channels.
  • Champion data integration and governance across the martech stack (CDP, analytics, tagging, consent, and privacy compliance).
Engineering Excellence & Platform Operations
  • Establish and enforce engineering standards for source control, code review, automated testing, CI/CD, environment management, and release governance.
  • Own platform reliability and observability for customer‑facing systems, including service levels, monitoring and alerting, incident and problem management, and post‑incident reviews.
  • Build security and compliance in by design, including PCI DSS, privacy regulations, identity and access management, and IT general controls for SOX‑relevant change management.
  • Manage technical debt deliberately and maintain the architecture documentation, runbooks, and support model needed for a sustainable post‑launch operation.
Customer Experience & Marketing Technology
  • Ensure a frictionless omnichannel journey across online, mobile, and showroom channels through unified customer identity, cart and quote persistence, and loyalty experiences.
  • Enable showroom associates with reliable POS, clienteling, and selling tools that reflect real‑time customer, product, and availability data.
  • Partner with Marketing and Customer Insights to architect and deliver martech capabilities for personalization, automation, and A/B testing across channels.
  • Evaluate, prototype, and scale emerging technologies (AI/ML, generative AI, 3D product visualization, personalization engines) against clear success criteria.
  • Track the roadmaps of key platform vendors and influence them on behalf of Arhaus.
  • Provide technical oversight of systems integrators, agencies, and SaaS vendors: review solution designs, challenge estimates, and hold partners accountable for quality, scope, and delivery.
  • Oversee technology budgets, licensing, and vendor relationships for commerce and marketing platforms.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 12+ years of technology experience, with at least 5 years leading engineering or platform teams responsible for customer‑facing commerce systems.
  • Hands‑on background in software engineering or solution architecture, with the ability to read code, review technical designs, and engage credibly with engineers and partner architects.
  • Deep experience with a leading commerce platform, preferably Shopify Plus (including Shopify POS, apps, APIs, and extensibility), and with headless or composable commerce architecture.
  • Strong integration expertise, including REST and GraphQL APIs, webhooks, event‑driven architecture, and middleware or iPaaS, with experience connecting commerce platforms to ERP, OMS, WMS, and PIM systems.
  • Working knowledge of cloud platforms and modern engineering practices (CI/CD, automated testing, infrastructure as code, observability). Internal Corporate Job Description
  • Experience with payments, tax, and PCI compliance in retail; familiarity with SOX IT general controls in a public company environment preferred.
  • Demonstrated success leading large‑scale platform implementations or migrations and delivering measurable business impact.
  • Experience implementing and scaling emerging technologies (AI/ML, personalization engines, product visualization, digital payments).
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and cross‑functional collaboration skills, including the ability to explain complex technical trade‑offs to executive and non‑technical audiences.
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to balance innovation, speed, and operational excellence.
