Qualifications

Director, Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI)

We have a great opportunity for a Director, Clinical Documentation Integrity on DaVita's Value Based Care Team- Integrated Kidney Care (IKC).

The CDI Education Director is responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating education initiatives that support accurate and comprehensive clinical documentation for risk-adjusted populations. This role ensures that CDI teammates and providers have the knowledge and tools needed to capture the complexity of patient conditions in alignment with CMS-HCC risk models.

The ideal candidate brings a deep understanding of risk adjustment methodologies, clinical documentation practices, and adult learning principles. They are skilled in leading cross-functional education efforts, coaching clinicians, and collaborating with coding and analytics teams to support organizational goals in quality, compliance, and reimbursement.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and lead comprehensive training programs for CDI specialists, providers, and other stakeholders focused on accurate clinical documentation for risk adjustment purposes.
  • Perform clinical chart reviews to ensure documentation accuracy by applying established clinical criteria for diagnosing medical conditions.
  • Evaluate how provider documentation, lab results, diagnostic information, and treatment plans translate into coded data.
  • Analyze and interpret clinical data to identify gaps, inconsistencies, and opportunities for improvement in documentation, and query providers following ACDIS/AHIMA guidelines.
  • Communicate with providers and healthcare team members to clarify information or request additional documentation.
  • Work with clinicians to improve documentation quality and completeness through queries and education.
  • Collaborate with team members in the clinical review process to ensure high accuracy and consistency.
  • Meet accuracy and productivity metrics to achieve departmental goals.
  • Address documentation issues and trends with DaVita leadership.
  • Participate in department meetings and conduct educational sessions for clinicians and coders.
  • Partner with risk adjustment, coding, and education departments for onboarding and ongoing education for providers on Medicare risk adjustment documentation requirements.
  • Support ongoing chart review processes and inter-reviewer reliability testing.
  • Adapt to departmental needs and demonstrate excellent analytical, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Work 2 days/week from Denver office or fully remote with travel as needed.
Required Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree with active clinical license (APRN)
  • NP or PA licensure without restrictions in the state of residence
  • CRC certification (or obtain within six months)
  • CCDS-O or CDIP certification (or obtain within one year)
  • 5+ years clinical experience as Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant
  • 3+ years clinical documentation improvement or coding experience
  • Experience working with advanced practice providers and staff
  • Knowledge of ICD-10 coding, documentation, and risk adjustment
  • Ability to review up to 50 records per day
  • Proficiency with EMR systems and MS Office applications
  • Ability to travel 2-4 times/year for on-site meetings
Preferred Attributes:
  • Expertise in Medicare risk adjustment and documentation/coding requirements
  • 2+ years in risk adjustment education or management
  • 4+ years developing clinical educational content
  • Master’s in Business, Education, Nursing, or related fields
  • Strong technical skills in MS Office
  • Coding certifications (CPC, CRC, CCDS-O, CDIP)
  • Experience with Medicare Advantage and CMS Risk Adjustment models
  • Background in clinical review or quality programs

Salary Range:

$97,000 - $181,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
