Responsibilities

We have an opportunity for a Claims Director to join our Berkley Public Entity (BPE) team! You will be responsible for the review, oversight, and specific handling of Professional Liability, General Liability, and Automobile claims including law enforcement and sexual abuse involving schools, municipalities, and other public entities. This is an individual contributor role.

Key Functions Include But Are Not Limited To

  1. Identify and evaluate risk transfer opportunities pursuant to contracts, lease agreements, certificates of insurance.
  2. Evaluate claims for coverage, liability, and damages to negotiate and resolve claims on reasonable terms and at an appropriate value.
  3. Communicate with insureds, brokers and TPA’s to secure additional claim information, communicate loss information, and monitor Self Insured Retentions and determine the extent of exposure to the insured and the company.
  4. Set reserves within authority or make claim recommendations concerning reserve changes to supervisor.
  5. Retain, direct, and manage litigation counsel through trial, developing and managing strategy for complex litigation; attend arbitrations, mediations, trials.
  6. Prepare timely and accurate reports to management regarding significant claim developments.
  7. Lead and participate in audits of TPA’s to ensure adherence to BPE claims guidelines.
  8. Communicate and collaborate across the organization—underwriting, marketing, and senior management—to achieve organizational success.
  9. Contribute to business development; participate in marketing and renewal events differentiating the BPE claims process within the marketplace.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's Degree.
  2. 10+ years of commercial liability claims experience required.
  3. Public Entity experience, preferred.
  4. Proven track record of building and maintaining strong business relationships with insureds, agents, brokers, and TPAs.
  5. Litigation experience necessary.
  6. Strong experience handling Professional Liability, along with a good knowledge of General Liability and Auto.
  7. Exceptional oral and written communication skills; your communication style is flexible to the situation; you communicate clearly and with a purpose.
  8. Calm under pressure; you have excellent organizational skills, integrity, and great follow-through on tasks; you are comfortable challenging norms while working collaboratively with colleagues at all levels of the organization.

Benefits

The company offers a competitive compensation plan and robust benefits package for full-time regular employees which for this role includes:

Base Salary Range: $140,000 - $160,000

The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment.

Eligible to participate in the annual discretionary bonus program.
