Job summary

Berkley Public Entity (BPE), a part of W.R. Berkley, seeks a Director of Claims for Public Entity to lead professional liability, general liability, and auto claims for municipalities and schools.

This is a senior, individual contributor role with broad interaction across underwriting and management. The role requires 10+ years of liability claims experience, public entity familiarity, and strong litigation and relationship-building skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required.
• 10+ years of commercial liability claims experience.
• Public Entity experience preferred.
• Proven track record building and maintaining relationships with insureds, agents, brokers, and TPAs.
• Litigation experience necessary.
• Strong knowledge of Professional Liability, General Liability and Auto.

Responsibilities

• Review, oversight, and handling of Professional Liability, General Liability, and Auto claims for public entities.
• Identify and evaluate risk transfer opportunities in contracts, leases, and certificates of insurance.
• Evaluate claims for coverage, liability, and damages; negotiate and resolve claims.
• Communicate with insureds, brokers, and TPAs to obtain information and monitor exposures.
• Set reserves within authority or advise on reserve changes.
• Direct and manage litigation counsel through trial and develop strategy for complex cases.
• Prepare timely reports on significant claim developments for management.
• Lead audits of TPAs to ensure adherence to claims guidelines.
• Collaborate with underwriting, marketing, and senior management to achieve organizational goals.
• Contribute to business development through marketing and renewal activities.

Responsibilities

We have an opportunity for a Director, Claims - Public Entity to join our team! You will be responsible for the review, oversight, and specific handling of Professional Liability, General Liability, and Automobile claims including: Law Enforcement and Sexual Abuse involving schools, municipalities, and other public entities. This is an individual contributor role.

Key functions include but are not limitedto:

• Identify and evaluate risk transfer opportunities pursuant to contracts, lease agreements, certificates of insurance.
• Evaluate claims for coverage, liability, and damages to negotiate and resolve claims on reasonable terms and at an appropriate value.
• Communicate with insureds, brokers and TPA’s to secure additional claim information, communicate loss information, and monitor Self Insured Retentions and determine the extent of exposure to the insured and the company.
• Sets reserves within authority or makes claim recommendations concerning reserve changes to supervisor.
• Retain, direct, and manage litigation counsel through trial, developing and managing strategy for complex litigation; attend arbitrations, mediations, trials.
• Prepare timely and accurate reports to management regarding significant claim developments.
• Lead and participate in audits of TPA’s to ensure adherence to BPE claims guidelines.
• Communicate and collaborate across the organization- underwriting, marketing, and senior management to achieve organizational success.
• Contribute to business development; participate in marketing and renewal events differentiating the BPE claims process within the marketplace.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree required.
• 10+ years of commercial liability claims experience required.
• Public Entity experience, preferred.
• Proven track record of building and maintaining strong business relationships with insureds, agents, brokers, and TPAs.
• Litigation experience necessary.
• Strong experience handling Professional Liability, along with a good knowledge of General Liability and Auto.
• Exceptional oral and written communication skills; your communication style is flexible to the situation; you communicate clearly and with a purpose.
• Calm under pressure; you have excellent organizational skills, integrity, and great follow-through on tasks; you are comfortable challenging norms while working collaboratively with colleagues at all levels of the organization.

The company offers a competitive compensation plan and robust benefits package for full time regular employees which for this role includes: Base Salary Range: $140,000 - $185,000 The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. Eligible to participate in the annual discretionary bonus program.
