Job description

Purpose

Pace Contracting is seeking a driven and relationship-oriented Director of Business Development to identify and capture new project opportunities across our growing markets. This role is central to expanding Pace's industrial and commercial client base, deepening our relationships with engineering firms, architects, and owners throughout our regional footprint, and positioning Pace for the evolving landscape of qualification-based project delivery including Design-Build, Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR), and Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT), particularly in the water and wastewater industries. The ideal candidate brings a strong background in heavy civil or general contracting, a natural ability to build lasting partnerships, and the initiative to pursue opportunity wherever it exists.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a strategic business development plan focused on growing Pace's industrial and commercial client base across our regional footprint, pursuing opportunity-driven growth wherever Pace's capabilities and capacity are best positioned to compete.

  • Identify, pursue, and cultivate relationships with key decision-makers at industrial and commercial owners, developers, municipalities, utilities, and government agencies throughout Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio.

  • Build and maintain strong, ongoing relationships with engineering firms and architectural firms to position Pace as the contractor of choice on upcoming projects — with emphasis on firms active in the water and wastewater infrastructure sector.

  • Lead the pursuit of qualification-based project delivery methods including Design-Build, Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR), and Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) particularly within the water and wastewater industries, as the market continues to shift away from traditional low-bid selection.

  • Monitor and track project leads, pre-construction opportunities, RFP/RFQ activity, and qualification-based solicitations across all target markets and geographies.

  • Collaborate with Pace's operations and estimating teams to align business development pursuits with the company's project delivery capabilities and current capacity.

  • Represent Pace Contracting at industry events, trade associations, conferences, and networking functions to elevate the company's profile and generate new business leads.

  • Coordinate with the LPC business development team on joint pursuits where a combined Pace/LPC approach provides a competitive advantage for LPX Group.

  • Prepare and present regular business development activity reports — including pipeline status, relationship updates, and market intelligence — to the Chief Administrative Officer on a monthly basis.

  • Meet regularly with Pace's President, estimating leadership, and operations managers to align on bid strategy, scope review, and overall market approach.

  • Monitor industry trends, competitor activity, and market developments in the industrial, commercial, and public infrastructure sectors to inform pursuit strategy.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field. An MBA or advanced degree is a plus.

  • Proven track record in business development, sales, or client relations within the construction, engineering, or infrastructure industries.

  • Strong understanding of the heavy civil, general contracting, or industrial construction markets, including familiarity with public and private procurement processes.

  • Established relationships with engineering firms, architects, and/or industrial and commercial owners throughout Kentucky, Indiana, or Ohio are strongly preferred.

  • Familiarity with qualification-based project delivery methods including Design-Build, CMAR, and BOT particularly in the water or wastewater sector, is a strong plus.

  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, comfortable engaging audiences from project managers to C-suite executives.

  • Self-starter with the ability to manage a diverse pipeline of opportunities and work effectively without close supervision.

  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to work cross-functionally across business units and with internal estimating, operations, and leadership teams.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and CRM software.

  • Willingness to travel regularly within the Kentuckiana region and across Pace's broader geographic footprint in Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio.
