The Automation and Process Transformation – Provider Operations leader is responsible for providing overall leadership to the Provider Operations automation and process transformation agenda. This includes establishing and maintaining automation and process transformation strategy, roadmaps, as well as executing against the agenda to achieve business outcomes. This role leads a team of automation and process architects as well as a matrix team across product, operations, technology and automation to drive cost savings and Service Level Agreement (SLA) performance improvements within the subset of clients managed by Optum Insights Revenue Services.

This leader interacts across multiple functions (product, operations, technology, global teams, enterprise) and with leaders at senior levels, such as COOs and CEOs; this role engages across Optum segments (Optum Insight (OI), and Optum Health (OH)) to generate and leverage ideas across the enterprise. Collaboration with UnitedHealthcare (UHC) is also required to deliver on Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) automation opportunities that require payer integration.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide automation and process transformation thought leadership - RCM expertise, addressing root cause, understanding how automation and other technologies will drive performance improvements and other desired business outcomes
  • Provide process and automation expertise spanning 5k+ operational leaders and front-line staff
  • Accountable for automation for provider services operations and partners across product, technology, global teams, enterprise teams that support Optum Insights Revenue Services. Foster ongoing collaboration with other business units (e.g ORx, OH and UHC segments)
  • Drive ideation session with business leaders to generate automation and process improvement opportunities
  • Maintain capability and process model to identify opportunities from the top down
  • Maintain a roadmap for automation by client to drive performance improvement and client savings outcomes
  • Create images, graphics and/or charts that provide exceptional clarity and connections between automation and process improvements to business objectives
  • Package presentations concisely for Optum Insight leadership and other executives
  • Provide direct leadership to a team of 5+ people and indirect reports accountable for Automation and Process Improvement (vendors, outsourced workforce within technology teams)
  • Set/mature the vision and strategy for the team
  • Create and foster an environment of innovation including: removing roadblocks and enabling strategic risk taking, advocating and driving change management, and enabling and modeling adoption of innovative behaviors and practices
  • Commit time, focus and energy on the development, coaching and performance feedback for each employee on the team
  • Advocate for the team by moving decisions forward and eliminating barriers
  • Identify and select the right talent in support of our mission

Required Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of progressive leadership across Provider Operations (RCM) and automation and process improvement experiences
  • 10+ years of experience in Revenue Cycle Management Operations
  • 3+ years of experience in Automation and Process Transformation (operational understanding of commercial automation platforms is a plus)
  • Experience creating and executing automation and process transformation plans with documented outcomes
  • Ability to travel up to 25%

  • Proven track record of effective working relationships with executives and key business partners to drive change agendas
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking abilities and an enterprise-wide perspective
  • History of executing with excellence: setting purposeful goals and achieving them through intelligent actions while balancing competing priorities without losing momentum behind execution
  • Experience leading through influence in a large, matrixed, global environment
  • Demonstrated people management responsibilities with senior level team members as direct reports
  • Demonstrated leadership style which fosters accountability, transparent communication and innovation
  • Proven high level of emotional intelligence and confidence
  • Proven outstanding collaboration and solid influencing, problem solving and negotiation skills
  • Proven ability to sell ideas to others outside of your direct team members
  • Experience with Digital, Data & Analytics and Open Source technologies

The salary range for this role is $124,500 to $239,400 annually based on full-time employment. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
