Director, Aircraft Manufacturing and Tooling Engineering

Archer is an aerospace company based in San Jose, California building an all-electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft with a mission to advance the benefits of sustainable air mobility. We are designing, manufacturing, and operating an all-electric aircraft that can carry four passengers while producing minimal noise.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead a cross functional team of engineers with diverse backgrounds in Manufacturing Engineering (ME), Manufacturing Planning, Automation Engineering, and Tool Engineering focused on Design for Manufacturing (DFM), manufacturing process development, and production support.
  • Lead the manufacturing priority and cross functional communication to engineering, quality, and supply chain to make sure all priorities are met on schedule.
  • Work in a fast paced and flexible environment.
  • Lead the development of standard processes and documentation for the Manufacturing Engineering department including manufacturing work plan authoring guide, tool definition requirements, producibility guidelines, etc.
  • Lead the development of the production system design for the structural aircraft and systems.
  • Lead Make/Buy studies and support supplying required data from the manufacturing team to allow the business to make good decisions.
  • Manage tooling and equipment suppliers and integrators through production system design and implementation.
  • Support manufacturing on the shop floor.
  • Validate and ensure production readiness of solutions to complex problems.
  • Develop and implement cost effective and improved processes for Lean production and tooling methodologies.
  • Analyze design/build concepts, to evaluate a producible design/build definition and investigate alternative solutions to meet producibility requirements.
  • Assist in providing input to the program plan to ensure that producibility activities and deliverables are incorporated.
  • Be a collaborative partner who drives change and establishes standardization of ME deliverables in order to achieve functional excellence.
  • Perform technical data analysis related to product workflow, manpower forecasting, and manufacturing performance.
  • Develop, coach and mentor ME and Tooling Design Managers to ensure they understand roles & responsibilities, provide performance feedback, develop a career roadmap and partner with them on their career aspirations.
  • Build and recruit your team to meet defined staffing and budget requirements.
  • Collaborate with quality to ensure inspection methods are defined and standards are established.
  • Plan and assign work strategies in the production schedule that covers maintenance of process equipment and inspection at proper intervals.
  • Assist with equipment installations and project planning.

What You Need:

  • BS or MS Degree in Engineering or a related field.
  • 4+ years experience leading a Manufacturing Engineering team.
  • Process and documentation development experience.
  • Manufacturing Engineering and/or Tool/Automation Engineering experience.
  • Structural or systems installation support experience.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Proven track record as an inspirational leader who invests and develops others.
  • Ability to understand, apply and implement concepts and lean tools.
  • Demonstrate potential to design, analyze and implement industrial engineering techniques.

Bonus Qualifications:

  • FAR 23 experience.
  • Part 21 experience.
  • Working under an FAA Production Certificate.
  • Standing up a new production facility.
  • Experience in automation and robotics.

Actual compensation offered will be determined by factors such as job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
