Job summary

MasTec Communications Group is seeking a Directional Drill Operator/Locator in California. You will support directional drilling for underground conduit and fiber, operate a bore in coordination with the Drill Locator, and ensure public safety and utility protection on site.

The role requires at least 2 years of urban directional drilling experience, proficiency with Vermeer or Ditch Witch drills, and a valid Class A CDL.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of utility directional drilling experience in an urban environment.
• Experience with Vermeer or Ditch Witch drills.
• Ability to read and understand maps, drawings, and diagrams for the project build process.
• Valid Class A CDL with a clean driving record.

Responsibilities

• Support directional drilling for installation of underground conduit and fiber optic cable.
• Operate a horizontal directional bore in collaboration with the Drill Locator to install coax and fiber systems.
• Ensure safety of the public and other underground utilities during operations.
• Read utility locates and coordinate daylighting of facilities.
• Transport heavy equipment to and from the job site daily.

Local work with occasional travel

In addition, you will:

• Locate a Horizontal Directional Driller for the installation of underground conduit and fiber optic cable
• Operate a horizontal directional bore in collaboration with the Drill Locator to successfully install coax and fiber systems
• Ensure the safety of the public and other underground utility facilities
• Read utility locates and coordinates the daylighting of these facilities
• Transport heavy equipment to and from the job site each day

Qualifications

Compensation of $26.26-$37.08 per hour, based on experience.

Additional details

• Overtime pay will be provided in accordance with California labor laws, at 1.5 times the regular hourly rate for hours worked over 8 hours in a day or 40 hours in a workweek
• Rest and Meal Breaks will be compensated for paid rest periods and granted unpaid meal breaks in accordance with California labor laws
• Your employment with MasTec is “at-will,” meaning either you or the company may terminate the employment relationship at any time, with or without cause or notice
• The schedule is typically 6 days per week, 10-12 hours per day
• Per diem includes hotel and $50 for food; Crews may travel one week at a time, with occasional extended stays of up to two weeks before returning home for a break.
