Job summary

Lanakila Pacific in Honolulu, HI seeks a Direct Support Worker I to provide direct instruction, care, and individualized training in our TLC program, following DOH waiver standards. This full-time role promotes skill development, daily living activities, and community engagement to help participants gain independence and quality of life.

The position requires experience with ID/DD or the elderly, TB clearance, First Aid/CPR, and a background check, with potential on-the-job training and travel

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma, certificate of completion, or equivalent.
  • Experience: At least one year of documented experience working with individuals with ID/DD or the elderly.
  • Clearances/Certifications: TB clearance, First Aid/CPR (may be obtained on the job), Criminal background check, Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver curriculum in person or via online platforms (e.g., Zoom).
  • Plan and implement meaningful, age-appropriate, participant-centered activities.
  • Coordinate and lead community-based activities that support participant goals.
  • Assist participants with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs).
  • Support participants in ISPs and participate in arrival/departure monitoring.

Direct Support Worker I - Full Time Bachelot

Lanakila Pacific provides a comprehensive range of programs and services that empower individuals with cognitive, physical, social, or age-related challenges to build independence and improve quality of life. Our Disability Services division operates under multiple contracts with the Hawaiʻi State Department of Health, Department of Human Services, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, and private partners. We collaborate closely with Lanakila Pacific’s social enterprises and Senior Services, with a core focus on employment training and placement.


POSITION OVERVIEW
:

The Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) Instructor I delivers direct instruction, care, and individualized training to participants in the TLC program in accordance with Department of Health (DOH) Waiver Standards and Lanakila Pacific’s mission and values. This role plans and implements daily activities that promote skill development, independence, and community engagement. The Instructor I supports participants in achieving their highest level of independence while maintaining high-quality services and demonstrating Lanakila Pacific’s values of teamwork, excellence, achievement, and motivation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

  • Education: High school diploma, certificate of completion, or equivalent.
  • Experience: At least one year of documented experience working with individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities (ID/DD) or the elderly.
  • Clearances/Certifications:
  • Annual TB clearance
  • First Aid/CPR certification (may be obtained on the job)
  • Criminal background check

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program Instruction & Support

  • Develop and deliver curriculum in person or via online platforms (e.g., Zoom).
  • Plan and implement meaningful, age-appropriate, participant-centered activities.
  • Coordinate and lead community-based activities that support participant goals.
  • Assist participants with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), including toileting, hygiene, grooming, dressing, and eating.
  • Support participants in alignment with their Individualized Service Plans (ISPs).
  • Serve in arrival/departure monitoring roles as assigned.
  • Act as a liaison with caregivers and participant support networks.
  • Research community activities and volunteer opportunities to expand participant opportunities.

Compliance, Documentation & Communication

  • Complete all required documentation accurately and on time.
  • Ensure confidentiality of participant information.
  • Utilize Therap Electronic Documentation for recordkeeping.
  • Maintain professional communication with participants, families, staff, and community partners.

Safety & Environment

  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitization of program areas, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Identify and remove safety hazards.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies with professionalism and calmness.

Professional Conduct

  • Demonstrate cultural competency and respect for diverse backgrounds and abilities.
  • Model positive behavior for staff, participants, and volunteers.
  • Follow all organizational policies, safety procedures, and work standards.
  • Participate in required training and ongoing professional development.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS/HOURS:

  • May require occasional work outside standard hours to meet operational needs.
  • Work occurs in classroom, office, outdoor, and community settings; may include travel to other sites.

EQUIPMENT USE:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, database systems, and videoconferencing platforms (e.g., Zoom, Google Meet).
  • Use of standard office equipment.

MENTAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to handle challenging situations and interactions.
  • Strong organizational skills and flexibility in dynamic environments.
  • Good judgment, initiative, and the ability to multitask with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to maintain positive and productive working relationships.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Frequent: Standing, walking, lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs, visual acuity (distance and color), stooping/kneeling/crouching/squatting, handling/pushing/pulling, sensory feeling (size/shape/temperature/texture), hearing, and travel.
  • Occasional: Lifting/carrying over 50 lbs, climbing ladders or stairs, balancing, and talking.
  • Seldom: Sitting.
  • Rare: Night vision (work in low‑light conditions) and tasting.
