Job description

BAYADA Direct Support Professionals - DSPs work one-on-one in home and community settings as a companion and mentor for individuals with intellectual or developmental disability to help them reach their full potential.

In addition, we are looking for someone who is proficient in American Sign Language (ASL) OR willing to learn ASL through provider guided training and self paced training.

  • We have an individual needing support who is both DEAF and BLIND.
  • We also have an individual whose hearing is quickly declining and needing support in becoming more proficient in ASL himself.

We have job openings in the following locations:

  • Morganton, NC
  • Flexible schedule

Required skills for this position (these skills can be acquired during BAYADA onboarding process and developed over time):

  • American Sign Language proficiency
  • ASL *intervener*
  • Present information in ways that the individual who is deaf/blind can understand it.
  • Helps the individual be aware of people and things in the environment and encourages the individual to reach out and connect with the broader world.
  • Helps the individual learn concepts that sighted and hearing individuals learn incidentally.
  • Staff increases opportunities for direct learning to occur and provides access to the huge amount of incidental information that is unavailable with combined vision and hearing loss.
  • Accompanying and supporting the individual across all environments including the home and the community.
  • Meeting the physical needs of the individual, including tactile sign language, sighted guide, assistance with toileting, dressing, feeding, etc., based on the individuals needs

Qualifications for DSPs:

  • One year experience working with I/DD individuals; If you do not have this experience, training is available through our apprentice program
  • High school diploma or equivalent
