Department 10019 Biomedical Engineering Pay Range $125,049.60 - $208,436.80

The Director of Biomed Engineering will direct and manage all facets of the Biomedical/Clinical Engineering Department to ensure a safe clinical environment. Will include equipment/technology planning, maintenance and repair . Will provide technological leadership and training to patient care personnel regarding equipment operations, standards, and maintenance. Rely on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Provide direction, supervision and development to the departmental staff. Create a high performance and integrated operation to ensure customer expectations are defined and met. Serve as a resource to assist, help, and provide insight to clinical and administrative decision makers. Coordinate biomedical technology management issues within the hospital such as equipment maintenance, equipment assessment, planning, acquisition, and project management. Thorough understanding of all regulatory issues in technology management, to include the Safe Medical Devices Act other regulations of FDA, JCAHO, NFP A, and OSHA; and any other relevant governmental regulations.

Minimum Education

Bachelor's Degree biomedical engineering or related field (Required) Master's Degree related field (Preferred)

An understanding of theory and application of engineering and scientific skills as applied in medical applications. Functional Accountabilities

Technology Evaluation Assess new technologies and their application to patient care; develop recommendations for use of technologies; evaluate high technology medical systems prior to purchase; make recommendations based on an understanding of technology and strategic goals of the institution and department. Actively integrate the Biomed Department with the institutions clinical IT plans.

Manages PM Program Develop and implement system for managing inventory control, preventive maintenance, repairs and equipment life histories for patient related biomedical equipment. Develop, review and update preventive maintenance procedures for new and existing equipment preventive maintenance with all departments. Ensure users know the status of requests for equipment purchases and work orders. Establish and maintain an organized plan for project management to include projects, resources, costs, and timeliness.

Cost Effectiveness Develop and manage cost-effective program for replacement parts and materials. Take cost-containment measures in equipment maintenance to fund and improve the quality of biomedical engineering equipment and staff, if an in-house program.

Customer Interface Coordinate visits to the work area to understand needs of the requestor; ensure any disruptions to the environment are announced and coordinated before hand; maintain the work area in a safe and secure manner. Effectively communicate with patient care personnel, provide information on a consistent, and open basis.

Reporting Report to leadership and users on technology-related issues (e.g., effectiveness, staffing concerns, operational costs, applicability); information systems relating to equipment maintenance information should be utilized to develop and support these positions. Serve as a resource/guide in technology acquisition programs.

Strategic Planning Develop and directs strategic plans for equipment acquisition, replacement, and redeployment within the system.

Human Resources Develop and implement staffing models; be responsible for hiring and controlling all staff related to biomedical equipment maintenance. Establish training programs and a schedule for the hospital’s equipment maintenance staff. Cross-train staff to ensure appropriate depth. Ensure staff communicate with users, understand needs and are able to be responsive. Create service agreement with users so that expectations for performance are clear.

The disclosed salary range includes the minimum and maximum rates within which Children’s National believes an individual’s base pay rate will fall for this position. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the maximum of the pay range. The exact pay rate for this position will be based on a variety of factors in alignment with the Children’s National compensation philosophy. These factors are legitimate and non-discriminatory including, but not limited to, the current market conditions; organizational needs; the individual’s combination of prior work experience, level of education, knowledge, skills, and other qualifications.
