Job summary

General Motors Defense is seeking a self-driven engineer with GD&T experience to define criteria for vehicle components and subsystems. You will assist suppliers in understanding and applying GD&T to establish part qualification systems and help engineering teams drive high-quality designs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering required.
  • 5+ years in an engineering discipline.

  • Knowledge of high and low build volume processes.
  • GD&T knowledge for developing part inspection criteria.
  • Understanding how variation affects manufacturability of mating components.
  • Build process troubleshooting experience.
  • Excellent collaboration with others inside and outside the organization.
  • Ability to work directly with suppliers and vendors.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve design/manufacturing issues quickly as part of a multi-functional team.
  • Run efficient meetings using Global Product Group guidelines.
  • Ability to present at multi-functional meetings and track to implementation.

Job Description The Role

We are looking for a self-driven individual with GD&T experience (creating and interpreting) that can act as a resource for the Engineering teams within GM Defense. Your main responsibility will be the definition of GD&T criteria for vehicle components and sub-systems. You will also assist suppliers understand and utilize GD&T to set up part qualification systems as needed. Ensuring high quality designs will entail utilizing your knowledge of engineering tools and processes to assist the DRE's in their development of components and sub-systems. At this level you are expected to operate with a high level of independent discernment and are typically responsible for implementing functional strategy and broadcasting these strategies to the broader Engineering Team. As a fully-qualified individual contributor who has thorough knowledge and understanding of all aspects of the function, you will provide expert judgment and analysis on future products.

What You’ll Do

You will coach and lead suppliers to timely execution of program work with perfection. Resolve highly sophisticated technical issues and conduct advanced research. Recommend alterations to development and design to improve quality of products and/or procedures. Be skilled and proficient with the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. Rely mostly on extensive personal experience and discernment to plan and accomplish goals. Perform multiple tasks. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering
  • 5+ of experience working in an engineering discipline
  • Minimum 3 years of component and sub-system GD&T design/release
  • Knowledge of high and low build volume processes
  • GD&T knowledge as it pertains to developing part inspection criteria
  • GD&T understanding of how variation affects the manufacturability of mating components
  • Build process trouble shooting experience
  • Excellent collaboration skills with others within and outside of their direct organization
  • Ability to work professionally with suppliers and vendors directly
  • Demonstrated ability to solve design/manufacturing issues quickly as part of a multi-functional team.
  • Run efficient meetings using the Global Product Group guidelines
  • Resolve engineering issues, present at multi-functional meetings and track to implementation

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the selected candidate is expected to report to a specific location at least 3 times a week {or other frequency dictated by their manager}. The selected candidate will be required to travel <25% for this role. This job is not eligible for relocation benefits. Any relocation costs would be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
