Job summary

Chicago Transit Authority is seeking a Digital Video Specialist to retrieve and manage surveillance video from buses, trains, and stations. You will liaise with law enforcement and federal agencies, maintain chain of custody, and support CTA security operations.

The role requires an associate degree or 3 years in a technical video field, plus experience with video editing software and a valid IL driver’s license. Training and available shifts may apply.

  • Previous experience with video editing and using video software such as Cyberlink PowerDirector, Snagit or equivalent is preferred.
  • Must be proficient with video retrieval and editing technology.

Responsibilities

  • Retrieves, compiles, edits, and preserves video evidence from CTA’s camera system across locations.
  • Coordinates with CTA departments and maintenance to obtain videos timely.
  • Documents and records all requests to maintain chain of custody.
  • Assigns an inventory control number to each video record retrieved.
  • Collaborates with departments to identify and report faulty equipment.
  • Stays updated with the latest video surveillance technology.
  • Provide technical support to CTA staff and law enforcement.
  • Provide testimony at depositions and trials as needed.
  • Ensure integration of CTA video capabilities with CPD and OEMC.

Description

SALARY

$83,167.46

POSITION SUMMARY

Under general supervision, retrieves and retains surveillance video from buses, rail cars, train stations and work locations. Provides video surveillance coverage for the Security Department.Acts as liaison as needed in the role of video retrieval specialist for the CTA with law enforcement, the Chicago Police Department, the Office of Emergency Management and Communication (OEMC), and federal agencies.

Qualifications
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Serves as video retrieval specialist for the CTA.
    • Retrieves, compiles, edits, and preserves video evidence from CTA’s camera system which includes work locations, rail platforms, and vehicles in response to investigations and/or requests from other CTA departments or outside agencies.
    • Coordinates with CTA departments (Rail & Bus Operations) as well as maintenance personnel to ensure videos are obtained in a timely manner.
    • Documents and records all requests in order to maintain proper chain of custody.
    • Assigns an inventory control number to each video record retrieved.
    • Collaborates with various departments to identify, troubleshoot, and report defective equipment for corrective action.
    • Stays up to date with the latest video surveillance technology.
  • Provide technical support as needed to CTA staff and law enforcement, CPD, OEMC, federal agencies, the CTA Law Department and CTA Safety & Security Department.
  • Provide testimony at depositions, arbitrations and trials as needed.
  • Ensure continued integration of CTA’s video surveillance capabilities within the CTA and the City of Chicago Police Department and OEMC.
  • Provides Technology Department with input for their ongoing video system expansion and upgrade plans.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to this position are the following jobs:

CHALLENGES
  • Maintaining flexibility in order to work various shifts/hours.
  • Travelling to and from various CTA work locations to collect video.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • An Associate's degree in Technology, Video Communications or 3 years of experience in a technical, video field or an equivalent combination of education and experience relating to this position.
  • Valid Illinois driver's license required for day and nighttime driving.
  • Previous experience with video editing and using video software (such as CyberlinkPower Director, Snagit or equivalent) is preferred.
  • Must be proficient with video retrieval and editing technology.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Requires sitting for extended periods of time, walking up and down stairs / onto buses or trains and/or rails.
  • Visual acumen, manual dexterity and fingering while working with computers/overhead compartments and tight spaces.
  • Auditory acuity to listen for CTA vehicles while working in bay and terminal areas.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 lbs.
  • Be able to pass a third rail training course.
  • Service Area Requirement: Exempt (Non-Union) employees must live within the boundaries of the CTA Statutory Service Area either at the time of employment or within 6 months of beginning employment at CTA.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills, specifically using video surveillance systems such as video retrieval and editing software
  • Strong attention to detail and detail-oriented
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and work with sensitive information in a secure manner
  • Intermediate Microsoft office skills.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • General office environment and field.
  • May be required travel to various CTA work locations.
  • May be required to work various extended or irregular hours (including nights and weekends) in order to meet project deadlines or respond to CTA emergencies.
  • Rotating work schedule to ensure adequate coverage at all times and throughout the system.
  • Must be available to respond to calls or email inquiries outside of regular work hours.

Additional Details Employees and/or union members will be given priority consideration in the hiring process, per the applicable labor contracts.

Final salary will be determined in part by the qualifications of the selected candidate and may be higher or lower than target.
