The Payload and Ground Systems Division at Northrop Grumman Space Systems (NGSS) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Digital Twin Model Based Systems Engineering Lead in support of the Protected Tactical SATCOM – Resilient (PTS) program. Built in partnership with the U.S. Space Force’s Space Systems Command, the company’s PTS-R system will deliver a modular, flexible and scalable system that offers a path toward fielding a next-generation anti-jam, protected tactical satellite communications architecture. Northrop Grumman’s system provides a tailor-made dependable communications pathway for each user capable of fighting through adversaries’ attempts to disrupt connections. The position will be 100% on site in Redondo Beach, CA.

What You’ll Get To Do:

As a Systems Engineer on this team, you will be responsible for developing and managing virtual representations (digital twins) of complex systems using Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) principles, allowing for detailed analysis, optimization, and prediction of system behavior across its lifecycle, often by simulating various operating conditions to identify potential issues and improve design before physical prototypes are built. This role combines expertise in digital twin concepts, systems engineering, and software architecture to create virtual representations of physical systems that support design, testing and lifecycle management.

Position is contingent on award.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Apply MBSE methodologies to drive the development of systems and ensure traceability from requirements to implementation
  • Conduct trade studies and analyses to determine optimal system configuration and designs
  • Lead technical discussions and decision-making to ensure system integrity and alignment with project goals
  • Design scalable and reliable software architectures to support digital twin systems and their integration with physical assets
  • Ensure that software designs align with overall systems requirements and operational use cases

This position may be filled at either the Principal Systems Engineer or higher grade based on the qualifications listed below.

Basic Qualifications for a Staff Systems Engineer:

  • 12 Years with Bachelors in Science; 10 Years with Masters; 8 Years with PhD.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Active Secret Clearance at time of application
  • Experience with Mission Operation Centers (MOC)
  • Experience with Network Designs, including high-performance network infrastructures, LAN, WAN, and cloud integration
  • Perform trade studies and system analysis to evaluate design options and recommend optimal solutions
  • Support the development of detailed technical documentation, including interface control documents (ICDs), requirements specifications and network diagrams
  • Proven expertise in network design, including LAN/WAN architecture, routing, switching, firewalls, and protocols (e.g., TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF)
  • Working knowledge of systems engineering principles and processes
  • Direct experience using the DOORS Requirements Management Database
  • Familiarity with Model-Based Systems Engineering languages (SysML/UML) and concepts
  • Demonstrated experience quickly learning new concepts and approaches

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understanding of Ground System architecture including Spacecraft Command and Control (C2), TT&C, and industry establishments (FORGE, EGS, Cornerstone, Raptor)
  • Experience with Agile development
  • Effective communication and presentation skills
  • Excellent technical writing and team-building skills
  • Active DoD Top Secret and/or SCI clearance
  • Working knowledge of systems engineering principles and processes
  • Demonstrated experience quickly learning new concepts and approaches
  • Deep knowledge of digital twin principles and applications
  • Proficiency in MBSE tools and techniques (e.g., CAMEO)
  • Strong understanding of software architecture and system integration
  • Ability to lead and collaborate within multidisciplinary teams
