Job summary

Ohio State University Physicians seeks a Digital Processing Technician to support the Histology Laboratory by preparing and organizing microscopy slides for digital scanning, matching slides with documents, and directing materials to pathologists.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associates degree or higher preferred in medical laboratory technology or biological science or equivalent.
  • Experience with laboratory information systems (Beaker, EPIC/IHIS) is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, organize, clean, label, and quality-check microscopy slides for digital scanning.
  • Process and track pathology specimens and requests with accurate documentation.
  • Match slides with paperwork and maintain specimen integrity through all stages.
  • Perform slide scanning support activities, including loading/unloading slides and reviewing scans.
  • Package, transport, receive, and distribute specimens and laboratory materials.
  • Use Beaker and other databases to document and track cases and specimens.
  • Collaborate with pathologists, histology staff, and laboratory teams to support diagnostic needs.
  • Maintain equipment and ensure a safe, organized, compliant work environment.
  • Adhere to safety, confidentiality, QA, and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

Purpose: The Digital Processing Technician provides high-quality support and customer service within the Histology Laboratory. This role involves the preparation, organization, and processing of microscopy slides for scanning, as well as accurately matching slides with documentation and directing materials to appropriate pathologists and laboratory personnel. Responsibilities include responding to requests for diagnostic pathology specimens, gathering required information, verifying request appropriateness, and ensuring proper approvals for specimen use from both on-site and off-site sources. The position also requires precise tracking of specimens and projects utilizing Beaker and other database systems while maintaining consistent collaboration with pathologists and related departments, including Histology and Surgical Pathology.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare, organize, clean, label, and quality-check microscopy slides for digital scanning.
  • Process and track pathology specimens and requests, ensuring accurate documentation and timely handling.
  • Match slides with corresponding paperwork and maintain specimen integrity through all stages of processing and transport.
  • Perform slide scanning support activities, including loading/unloading slides and reviewing scanned images for quality.
  • Package, transport, receive, and distribute specimens, slides, and laboratory materials according to established procedures.
  • Utilize laboratory information systems (Beaker, EPIC/IHIS, and other databases) to document, track, and manage cases and specimens.
  • Collaborate with pathologists, histology staff, and other laboratory teams to support diagnostic and operational needs.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, perform routine cleaning and maintenance tasks, and ensure a safe, organized, and compliant work environment.
  • Adhere to all safety, confidentiality, quality assurance, and regulatory requirements while providing exceptional customer service and support.
  • Assist with inventory management, documentation, problem resolution, and other departmental projects and operational activities as assigned.
Qualifications
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
Preferences:
  • Associates degree or higher preferred in medical laboratory technology or biological science or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • High levelof interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
  • Analytical ability and critical thinking to gather and interpret data and develop, recommend, and implement solutions.
  • Ability tomaintainand seek new knowledge related toevidenced-based practice, patient care issues, quality improvement, cost reduction, and current policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Stays current with knowledge and technicalskills within Histology and Pathology.
  • Knowledge of electronic medical records (EMR), PACS, documentation standards, and patient confidentiality (HIPAA).
  • Understands electronic equipment and computerized lab equipment.
  • Demonstrates discipline-specific technical skills.
Pay Range

USD $15.35 - USD $23.08 /Hr.
