Job description

Inc. Business Media is looking for a sharp, creative, metrics‑driven Staff Editor to lead our fast-paced trending news operation. This editor will manage a small team of news writers and will be responsible for assigning, editing, and publishing timely stories that help entrepreneurs make sense of the world around them.

The ideal candidate is obsessed with what’s trending and why, fluent in digital publishing best practices, and energized by the challenge of growing audience and impact through smart, relevant, and highly shareable news coverage. This editor will also work closely with colleagues across Inc.’s editorial team to ensure our news desk is a model of efficiency, accuracy, and creativity.

This role will require weekly in-office presence on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at our corporate office at 7 World Trade Center, New York, NY.

This position is covered under the Writers Guild of America East Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Salary range: $80,500-$90,000. Compensation may vary based on relevant experience, skills, industry, and education.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING
  • Lead and manage the Inc. news team, including two freelance writers, providing clear assignments, feedback, and coaching.
  • Edit and publish daily news stories across topics including technology, entrepreneurship, workplace, and the broader business landscape.
  • Monitor trending topics across major platforms and news outlets to identify opportunities for rapid response coverage.
  • Employ digital news best practices, including Discover-forward headlines, strategic packaging, and smart distribution.
  • Analyze audience metrics using tools such as Google Analytics and Parse.ly to inform coverage priorities and refine editorial strategies.
  • Improve newsroom workflows, identifying efficiencies that support speed, accuracy, and quality.
  • Collaborate with senior editors to shape the news team’s editorial direction and to maintain consistency with Inc.’s voice and mission.
  • Drive audience growth through keen news judgment, smart editing, and a deep understanding of what resonates with entrepreneurs and business leaders.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
  • 3-5+ years of newsroom experience, ideally in digital business, tech, or general news.
  • Proven editing experience, particularly with fast-moving daily news.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and mentor writers, providing constructive feedback and elevating their work.
  • Exceptional news judgment and a strong sense of what stories will resonate with Inc.’s entrepreneurial audience.
  • Strong understanding of digital publishing tools, SEO, appropriate use of AI, analytics platforms, and modern content workflows.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Highly organized, proactive, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
  • A collaborative team player eager to contribute ideas and adapt as news priorities shift.
  • Genuine interest in entrepreneurship, business trends, and workplace culture.
