Job description

The Baltimore Sun is looking for a fast, curious, and highly motivated journalist to help us build a broader and more dynamic daily news report for our readers.

This is a job for someone who loves the news — and loves finding it.

The Digital News Producer will continuously monitor The Sun's network of content partners, news organizations, government agencies and other reliable sources to identify important and compelling stories our readers should know about. The producer will select, edit, aggregate and, when appropriate, build original stories from that material for The Sun's digital platforms and expanded e-edition.

We're looking for someone with excellent news judgment who can move quickly across subjects. On any given day, that might mean identifying a significant investigation from a partner newsroom, spotting a Maryland connection in a national story, turning a government announcement or public document into a clear news story, or recognizing a consequential development being reported elsewhere that The Sun should pursue or include in its report.

The right person will be intellectually curious, competitive and comfortable making decisions. We want someone who looks at a large volume of information and instinctively asks: What's new? What's important? What will our readers care about? And what are we missing?

Essential Functions
  • Monitor The Sun's content partners, including Sinclair, NOTUS, The Epoch Times, The Frederick News Post and other news providers, and identify strong material for publication or further development.
  • Constantly scan other local, regional and national news sources for stories and developments relevant to Sun readers.
  • Select and prioritize stories for an expanded daily e-edition and The Sun's digital report.
  • Write and produce accurate, engaging stories from press releases, public records, government announcements, partner reporting and other appropriately attributed source material.
  • Use AI and other digital tools to accelerate research, discovery and production while independently verifying facts, sources and final copy.
  • Identify Maryland angles and local consequences of important national stories.
  • Rewrite, update, contextualize and package partner material as appropriate under The Sun's agreements and editorial standards.
  • Write strong headlines, summaries and other digital display language.
  • Recognize when a story warrants additional original reporting and alert or work with the appropriate Sun editor or reporter.
  • Maintain high standards for accuracy, attribution, fairness and transparency even while working at speed.
  • Help The Sun experiment with new ways to use partnerships, technology and the breadth of the news ecosystem to give readers a richer daily report.
What we're looking for
  • Strong and independent news judgment.
  • Exceptional curiosity and a broad interest in news, politics, government, crime, business, education, culture and public affairs.
  • The ability to work quickly and accurately across multiple stories and subjects.
  • A competitive instinct and a desire to find important stories before others do.
  • Strong writing, editing and headline-writing skills.
  • Comfort working with material from news organizations with different editorial perspectives and identifying worthwhile journalism regardless of its source.
  • An instinct for accountability journalism and stories involving government performance, public spending, taxes, regulation, public safety and the decisions of powerful institutions.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted research and production tools, or an eagerness to master them.
  • Sound judgment about sourcing, verification, attribution, copyright and the distinction between confirmed information and claims that require additional reporting.
  • The ability to work independently, prioritize aggressively and produce consistently throughout a shift.

Experience in a digital newsroom, breaking-news operation, local television newsroom, wire service, homepage or audience team is strongly preferred. We care more about speed, judgment, curiosity and demonstrated ability than a particular career path.

This is a hands-on news-production job for a journalist who wants to help determine what The Baltimore Sun covers and put more timely, consequential and interesting journalism in front of our readers every day.

Salary Range: $60,000 – $75,000
