Job Description Summary

The Digital Metrology Programmer will lead the development, validation, standardization, and continuous improvement of advanced digital inspection methods across blue light scanning, laser scanning, computed tomography (CT), and related 3D data analysis technologies. This role serves as a technical resource for manufacturing, quality, and engineering teams by translating complex product and process requirements into robust inspection strategies, analyzing dimensional data, troubleshooting measurement processes, and advancing the organization’s digital metrology capability.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, validation, standardization, and continuous improvement of digital metrology programs and inspection strategies using blue light scanning, laser scanning, CT inspection, and related 3D analysis technologies.
  • Translate drawing, model-based definition, GD&T, and engineering requirements into robust, repeatable, production-ready digital inspection methods.
  • Analyze scan, point cloud, mesh, and volumetric inspection data to identify dimensional results, trends, technical risks, and potential quality concerns; create clear reports, visual outputs, and measurement summaries for cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Serve as a technical escalation point for digital inspection equipment, programs, workflows, and measurement issues in a production environment, including troubleshooting, program adjustments, operator support, and resolution of complex inspection issues.
  • Develop standard work, workstation instructions, methods documentation, best-practice guidance, and training materials to improve program execution, strengthen operator capability, and sustain digital metrology processes.
  • Partner with manufacturing engineers, quality engineers, operators, and technical teams to mature digital metrology capability, influence scalable digital metrology practices, and improve safety, quality, delivery, and cost performance.
  • Support the evaluation, implementation, and optimization of automation, robotic inspection integration, fixture validation, and digital workflow improvements where applicable.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, Associate’s degree or Machinist Apprentice graduate; or high school diploma/GED with a minimum of 2 years of equivalent technical experience.
  • Minimum of 4 additional years of experience in digital inspection technology, metrology, manufacturing engineering, quality engineering, CMM programming, or a related technical discipline.
  • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience programming with GOM/Zeiss Inspect and working with ATOS sensors.
  • Ability and willingness to work on site in a manufacturing production environment.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T, drawing interpretation, and dimensional inspection principles.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot measurement processes, communicate technical findings clearly, and support production needs.

Desired Characteristics

  • Advanced knowledge of GD&T, dimensional inspection principles, and drawing/model interpretation, preferably aligned with ASME Y14.5 standards.
  • Demonstrated experience developing, validating, and supporting digital inspection programs for 3D scanning, CT inspection, robotic scanning, automated inspection cells, or other advanced metrology technologies.
  • Proficiency with point cloud processing, mesh generation, scan alignment, deviation analysis, volumetric inspection analysis, and dimensional report generation using digital metrology and 3D inspection analysis software.
  • Experience working with 3D solid models, model-based definition, model-based inspection data, and CAD platforms such as NX or similar tools.
  • Experience with Zeiss Inspect, GOM/ATOS, Airfoil inspection applications, Volume Graphics, Creaform, VXelements, Control X, Geomagic, PC-DMIS, or comparable metrology programming and inspection analysis platforms.
  • Experience supporting automation, robotic integration, fixture validation, scripting, or workflow optimization, including use of VBA, Python, or similar tools where applicable.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including applied shop math, geometry, and trigonometry used in dimensional inspection and metrology applications.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while balancing production support, technical problem solving, documentation, training, and continuous improvement work.
  • Experience supporting dimensional inspection or metrology for heavy-duty gas turbine, aerospace, energy, or other complex precision components; willingness to provide occasional off-shift or urgent production support as business needs require.
