Introduction / Opening
Help shape how Hillsboro community members build digital skills and connect with the resources they need. Hillsboro Public Library is hiring two part-time Digital Literacy Librarians—one at Brookwood and one at Shute Park to join a growing five-person digital literacy team. You’ll help develop programs, build community partnerships, and provide welcoming library service.
About the Library Department
Hillsboro Public Library connects people with information, learning opportunities, and each other. Our mission, For Everyone | Para Todos, guides how we serve our community. Our work is grounded in the Library’s five values: Belonging, Credibility, Excellence, Sustainability, and Innovation with Purpose. These values shape how we serve the public, support digital inclusion, and respond to the changing technology and information needs of our community. Digital literacy is a priority for both the Library and City Council, supported by a strong programming budget and a commitment to making services accessible.
Position Overview & Key Responsibilities
This is a generalist Librarian role with a strong focus on community engagement and digital literacy programs and services. Both positions will have similar responsibilities at their respective branches. You’ll provide routine technology assistance at the service desk, develop and coordinate responsive programs and services, and connect people with resources that support their ability to navigate technology.
You will report to the Community Digital Literacy Supervisor and work closely with Digital Navigators, who provide scheduled, extended one-on-one help with specific tasks.
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Provide welcoming, responsive service to a broad range of community members and help them find information, materials, and Library resources.
- Provide reference, research, and readers advisory assistance in person and through phone, email, and online service points.
- Build relationships with community members and organizations to understand digital learning needs and connect people with useful services.
- Develop, coordinate, and evaluate community-focused digital literacy programs, working with partners who may create or deliver programming.
- Review current offerings and bring ideas for refreshing or reimagining programs based on community input and learning needs.
- Help patrons with routine technology questions involving Microsoft applications, online searching, email, job applications, mobile device use, and access to online forms and services.
- Support information literacy by helping patrons find and evaluate information and build skills they can use independently.
- Adapt instruction and assistance for different language needs, disabilities, experience levels, and barriers to technology access.
- Coordinate with Digital Navigators and Library colleagues to connect patrons with appropriate support and identify opportunities for programs and outreach.
- Stay current with technology and emerging trends that affect how community members find information and use services.
- Support daily operations and a safe, welcoming environment by following Library and City policies, maintaining records, contributing to projects, and serving as Person in Charge when assigned.
- Serve as Person in Charge of a Library branch on an occasional basis.
Current & Upcoming Projects
- Help the new digital literacy team establish shared priorities and its approach to service during the first six to twelve months.
- Connect with community partners to learn from their relationships and experience, explore collaboration, and build on digital literacy work already underway.
- Evaluate existing programs and help develop refreshed or new learning opportunities with colleagues and community partners.
Experience to Highlight in Your Application

- Digital instruction and coaching: Teaching individuals or groups, explaining tasks clearly, adapting your approach, and helping learners build confidence and independence.
- Practical technology assistance: Helping others use devices, email, software, online services, or digital library resources, including troubleshooting basic problems.
- Program planning and evaluation: Identifying a community interest or need, developing or adapting a program, coordinating delivery, and using participant feedback or other results to improve it.
- Accessible, inclusive, and trauma-informed service: Adjusting communication or service for different backgrounds, languages, disabilities, experience levels, or barriers to access while supporting dignity, safety, and belonging.
- Community engagement and partnerships: Building trust, listening to community members, developing relationships with organizations, reaching people beyond routine service points, and using what you learned to improve services or outreach.
Relevant examples may come from employment, volunteer work, internships, or other applicable experience. Education and experience in education, nonprofit work, community engagement, adult learning, and instructional design are relevant to this work.
