Job summary

WGEM-TV/Gray Media, Inc. is seeking a Digital Journalist to produce daily local news content for the web, including written stories and video, and to assist with other digital content as assigned.

Duties include developing local stories, responding to breaking news, operating professional video equipment, conducting interviews, writing scripts, and creating SEO-friendly headlines to maximize online visibility.

Qualifications

  • On-camera presentation and verbal communication skills.
  • Written communication skills. Proficiency in AP Style.
  • Proficiency with non-linear video editing software.
  • Technical proficiency operating field camera equipment.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and meet rapid-fire deadlines under pressure.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, research, and pitch original, compelling daily local news stories.
  • Respond to breaking news and adapt to changing editorial priorities.
  • Operate cameras, lighting, and audio to gather high-quality video and sound.
  • Conduct professional, concise interviews for news packages.

Job Summary/Description:

The Digital Journalist is responsible for producing daily web content, including written stories and video, and assisting with other digital content when assigned.

Duties/Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Develop, research, and pitch original, compelling, and relevant daily local news stories.
  • Respond immediately to breaking news assignments and adapt quickly to changing editorial priorities.
  • Function as a one-person band by operating professional video cameras, lighting, and audio equipment to gather high‑quality visual and sound elements.
  • Conduct professional, concise, and informative interviews.
  • Write scripts for news packages, voice‑overs, and teases in clear, conversational broadcast style, adhering to strict time limits.
  • Perform non‑linear editing of video and audio elements to create visually engaging and coherent news reports.
  • Write compelling, Search Engine Optimized (SEO) headlines and summary text for all published video streams and stories to maximize online visibility and traffic.
  • Verify the accuracy of all facts, names, and information before air.
  • Adhere strictly to journalistic ethics, libel laws, and station standards and policies.
