Job description

Modern Healthcare, the authoritative source for healthcare business news, is seeking a full-time, experienced reporter to cover the rapidly evolving role of digital health and technology in healthcare.

This is a key role in our newsroom and a great opportunity for someone keen on delving into how artificial intelligence, ambient dictation and other groundbreaking technologies are quickly evolving the business models for health systems, hospitals and insurers during a time of unprecedented change in the $5 trillion U.S. healthcare industry.

We’re seeking an astute and enterprising reporter eager to find new ways of telling stories. The right candidate has good news judgment and is able to break news and juggle daily stories along with analysis and enterprise. We have a sophisticated audience that includes industry leaders at hospitals, insurers, physician groups, tech firms and other vendors and policymakers.

Smart journalism is Modern Healthcare’s hallmark and what sets us apart from our competition, and we’re looking for the right reporter to join our collaborative team.

Modern Healthcare is based in Chicago but will consider remote work from a state listed on our career site. You will be expected to work Central Time Zone hours if remote.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field
  • A minimum of two years of reporting experience
  • Minimum of three recent clips
  • Ability to meet deadlines and file clean, concise and comprehensive copy on complex issues with a high degree of accuracy, balance and readability
  • Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Must have attention to detail, industry knowledge and the ability to interpret data
  • Ability to digest large amounts of information, “see the story,” and execute with urgency as needed
  • Ability to work remotely while keeping your editors and colleagues informed of your assignments and developments

Job candidates most likely to excel in this position will be ones who are self-starters motivated by excellence, are hungry/competitive and enjoy being part of a team.

This position is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not eligible for overtime pay.

Pay Transparency Disclosure: The estimated salary range for this position is $60,000 to $80,000.

The final salary offering will take into account a wide range of factors, including experience, accomplishments and location. The salary range provided should not be considered as a salary limit or cap. In addition to base salary, Crain also offers competitive benefits including retirement plan savings contributions and bonus opportunities based on individual and company performance.

Work Environment

Employee work location is determined by the needs of the specific team and may include on-site, hybrid or remote. Employee work location is subject to change.

  • An “in-office” role would require the employee to come into the office most days with occasional flexibility to work remotely if tasks can be performed elsewhere and if the manager approves.
  • A “remote” role would allow an employee to work from a home office that is in one of the states Crain does business in.
  • A “hybrid” role would be a mix of in-office and remote work.
Equal Opportunity Employer

Crain Communications is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes applications from diverse candidates. We are committed to creating an inclusive work environment and providing equal opportunities for all employees and applicants.
