Job summary

Timberlab in Portland, OR seeks an experienced DC Engineer I to lead mass timber detailing and fabrication-level modeling using Revit. You will manage design development, RFIs, submittals, and coordination to support CNC fabrication and install.

Responsibilities include guiding documentation, ensuring constructability, and collaborating with project teams to refine detailing, schedules, and cost-efficiency across mass timber projects.

Qualifications

  • Engineering, Construction Management, or Architectural degree or equivalent
  • 3-5 years of construction-related experience
  • Experience with Revit and parametric modeling
  • Mass timber detailing background preferred
  • Ability to read and interpret structural details

Responsibilities

  • Lead design development and contract drawing review for mass timber and other structural systems; manage RFIs, submittals, and documentation
  • Lead/assist with document control, QC, submittals, RFIs, MEP coordination, meeting minutes, and constructability reviews
  • Manage tracking of design issues from submission to closeout and implementation
  • Assist with internal schedule updates and projections for DC efforts
  • Develop and refine fabrication-level models using Revit to support CNC exports and fabrication
  • Collaborate with project teams, suppliers, and vendors on constructability and drawings

Job Description
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
  • Able to perform all essential DC Engineer I responsibilities
  • Lead design development and contract drawing review for mass timber and other structural systems; manage resolution logs, request for information (RFIs), and other documentation during design development process
  • Lead/assist with document control, quality control, submittals, generating RFI’s, MEP Coordination, Meeting Minutes, and Constructability Reviews.
  • Manage tracking of, and advocate for, design issues through initial submission to closeout and implementation
  • Assist with internal schedule updates and projections for work relating to DC efforts
  • Use and develop parametric modeling techniques (Autodesk Revit), and assist DC team with enhancements to create efficiencies in fabrication-level modeling, with respect to cost/schedule and mitigation of detailing/fabrication errors on current/future projects
  • Utilize Revit as tool to create clear and organized progression drawing sets (RFI, internal team review, AE review, and field review)
  • Continuously enhance knowledge and expertise in 2D/3D model review via Navisworks, Revit Schedules, and review of current global/shared parameters
  • Lead/assist with CNC exports for machine language, develop proficiency in modeling (tooling, cut sequence/path, performance, tolerance)
  • Manage model transfer and process to Fabrication Team
  • Manage fabrication-based app integration and setup
  • Further develop understanding of schedule process within DC team and its broader impact on early pre-con efforts, manufacturing, fabrication sequence, and install
  • Perform CNC cut testing review/QC as it relates to machine time and quality.
  • Provide actionable feedback to DC and Pre-Con teams using research and data as built from previous fabrication efforts
  • Partner with internal project team, A/E team, suppliers, other trades, and vendors on constructability. Manage documentation of all partner meetings and action items
  • Lead QC and review/coordination with dissimilar trades, as well as Clash resolution.
  • Utilize structural material knowledge to refine and drive DC detailing efforts and practices.
  • Assist senior team members with constructive feedback loops to structural and architectural consultants to enhance future projects
  • Advocate ownership goals, architectural visual intent, and Timberlab fab/install; work to interpret these goals during early pre-con efforts (internal/external)
  • Stay abreast to standards and continuously thrive to develop and improve our design/detailing standards
  • Lead/assist with developing internal and external technical marketing materials
  • Other responsibilities as assigned
Minimum Skills & Experience Requirements
  • Engineering, Construction Management, or Architectural degree, or completion of Construction Management Certificate Program, or equivalent
  • 3-5 years of construction-related experience, or equivalent
  • Construction related internship experience preferred
  • Basic computer skills
  • Extensive knowledge of Revit (or similar software) as a document development tool - including proven experience with parametric modeling
  • Structural detailing and/or mass timber-specific detailing background preferred
  • Fundamental understanding of contract plans through all disciplines
  • Ability to read and interpret structural details, steel vendor shop drawings, non-structural shop drawings, product data, etc.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of understanding of design and construction schedules
  • CNC fabrication experience (detailing, operation, etc.) is a plus
  • Effective organizational skills
  • Effective written and verbal English language communication skills
  • Ability to use independent judgment, self-starter
  • Drafting and advanced computer skills a plus
  • Continued thirst for knowledge and understanding of mass timber systems, design, and project approach
