The Dietary/Food Service Aide performs specific tasks in the Food Service Department, including assisting in keeping the dining and cooking areas clean, sanitary, and running smoothly.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Dietary/Food Service Aide at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Food Standards:
    • Completes all assignments related to daily food preparation, such as tray assembly according to department procedures.
    • Prepares, pours, or portions hot or cold items such as desserts, beverages, toast, salads, sandwiches, lemons, garnishes, etc., for service.
    • Maintains proper food handling, safety, and sanitation standards during food preparation, serving, and clean-up.
    • Prepares and delivers food to resident floors and sets up patient trays.
    • Delivers and retrieves resident trays according to departmental procedures.
    • Receives soiled trays, removes dirty dishes, and returns cleaned and dried trays and utensils to proper places.
    • Knows various diets and adheres to patient diet restrictions when serving trays.
  • Infection Control:
    • Washes hands frequently, especially before returning to or starting work.
    • Wears gloves according to policy, removing and reapplying them as appropriate.
    • Maintains complete hair coverage when serving and preparing food.
    • Maintains proper temperatures for hot and cold water.
  • Quality Control:
    • Follows cleaning schedules.
    • Keeps floors dry and reports spills immediately.
    • Stores supplies and equipment properly, avoiding clutter on floors.
    • Reports hazardous conditions and equipment issues promptly.
    • Ensures tray checks comply with diet modifications and meet productivity standards.
    • Understands diet modifications, including sodium, liquid consistency, and portion control.
  • Sanitation:
    • Handles food following sanitary and safety regulations.
    • Cleans and sanitizes dining areas, equipment, and food contact surfaces regularly.
    • Prepares dishes for washing and stores them properly after drying.
    • Prepares dishwashers and maintains cleanliness of floors and stainless steel surfaces.
    • Reports equipment or safety issues immediately.
    • Removes and disposes of garbage and liquid waste correctly.
Other Duties as Assigned

Handles special projects and rush assignments promptly as needed.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Ability to read, write, speak English, and follow oral and written instructions.
