Description

Mobile Maintenance Technician performs diagnostics, inspections, and repairs on a fleet of commercial transportation equipment. This person must be skilled and safety focused. This position operates a company-provided service truck and provides mobile maintenance support for tractors, yard spotters, chassis, dry van trailers, refrigerated trailers (reefers), and other fleet equipment throughout the Columbus and surrounding regional service areas. The Mobile Maintenance Technician plays a critical role in maximizing fleet uptime, ensuring DOT compliance, responding to roadside and on-site repair needs, and supporting efficient transportation operations. This position reports directly to the Maintenance Manager and works closely with drivers, operations personal, and vendors.

Fleet Maintenance & Repair

Perform preventive maintenance inspections and services on tractors, trailers, chassis, reefers, yard spotters, and support equipment.

  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, refrigeration, and trailer-related issues.
  • Repair and maintain diesel engines, brakes, suspensions, lighting systems, tires, wheels, air systems, and electrical components.
  • Perform DOT inspections when qualified/authorized and ensure equipment meets all applicable federal, state, and company safety requirements.
  • Troubleshoot equipment breakdowns and provide mobile roadside or on-site repair services.
  • Test and inspect completed repairs to verify safe and proper operation.
  • Accurately and timely document inspections, diagnostics, repairs, labor, parts usage, equipment condition, and work performed within TMT.
  • Maintain parts usage records and inventory controls.
  • Communicate equipment status updates to management and operations personnel.
REQUIRED:
  • Minimum of 2 years of diesel, trailer, or fleet maintenance experience.
  • Experience working on commercial transportation equipment preferred.
  • Experience troubleshooting mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • CDL Class A is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to meet company driving qualifications to operate a service vehicle.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair tractors, trailers, chassis, reefers, and yard spotters.
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures and DOT regulations.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, lifting devices, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and maintenance management software.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent communication and customer service abilities.

*Any combination of education, training and/or experience that fulfills the requirements of the position will be considered.

PREFERRED:
  • Completion of formal training program.
  • EPA Section 608 certification preferred when duties include refrigerant circuit repairs.
Minimum Physical Requirements:
  • Work is performed in shop, yard, roadside, customer-site, and outdoor environments.
  • Physical conditions: Frequent walking on even/uneven surfaces, bending, lifting, rotating, climbing, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, and working in and around commercial vehicles and equipment.
  • Environment: Exposure to hot/cold temperatures, weather, noise, vibration, dirt, grease, diesel exhaust, and automotive fluids; occasional work in temperature-controlled areas.
  • Work includes the safe use of hand and power tools, lifting devices, diagnostic equipment, and material handling equipment according to established operating procedures.
