Ryder is hiring a Diesel Technician in Charge in Newport News, VA. This role offers weekly pay and excellent benefits.
Pay & Bonus
- Hourly Pay: $38.00 per hour
- Certification Bonus: $100 for each new ASE certification (up to $700)
- Quarterly Bonus: up to $500 each quarter
- Schedule: Monday–Friday; Weeksends OFF
- Hours: First Shift 8:00 am – 4:30 pm

Responsibilities
- Assist and train Technicians as needed
- Provide customer service to daily customers
- Give feedback to the Service Manager regarding employee performance, appraisal, and discipline
- Oversee parts distribution & inventory, shop reporting, warranty recovery, unit tracking
- Administer payroll and other duties assigned by the Supervisor/Manager
Requirements
- 18 years of age or older
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Vocational or Technical Certification or Post‑Secondary degree preferred
- Basic tools required
- Demonstrated aptitude and experience in mechanical repair of automotive gas or diesel engines:
- Routine preventive maintenance (oil changes, brake and tire work)
- Diagnostics and repairs, including AC and electrical systems
- Advanced skilled level repairs (major engine repairs, diesel after‑treatment, fuel injection repairs)
- Four (4) years or more relevant work experience preferred
- Ability to read codes and instructions on a computer
- Computer experience in Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet usage, and related programs
- Experience with maintenance computerized programs to create reports or communicate with customers, vendors, and company representatives
- Valid Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A preferred
- All other certifications as required by location
Additional Requirements
- Valid driver’s license and ability to meet Ryder’s driving qualifications
- Minimum Tech II up to Tech IV qualifications plus at least 6 months supervisory or training experience
- Ability to work flexible schedules, including shift work, weekends, holidays, and on‑call roadside assistance rotations
- Proficiency in SMO, SBT, payroll system, warranty recovery, and employee handbook
- Thorough understanding of unit utilization procedures
- Obtain a CDL within 6 months after hire
- Pass Ryder drug test, DOT physical, Ryder road test, and Ryder background & motor vehicle check (including drug and alcohol verification from previous employers for the last 3 years)

Ideal candidates will have a minimum of 6 months in their current position and possess a record of good performance, attendance, safety, and teamwork.
