Job summary

First Student in Freeport, NY is seeking a Maintenance Technician to perform routine and non-routine maintenance, diagnostic and repair work on buses and vans in accordance with FirstGroup standards. Work is performed with minimal supervision, with opportunities to mentor others and potentially serve as Shift Foreman.

This safety-sensitive role includes drug and alcohol testing where required. Qualified candidates will have a high school diploma or GED, a Class B CDL with passenger endorsement,

Qualifications

  • Advanced mechanical aptitude and 5 years of automotive or diesel repair experience or equivalent education and experience.
  • CDL with passenger endorsement required within 3 months of hire.
  • State inspection license (if required) and ASE certification encouraged.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain vehicles and ensure safety by performing basic and complex maintenance with minimal supervision.
  • Repair brakes, tune-ups, suspensions, drive trains and transmissions.
  • Keep accurate maintenance records and ensure work orders are completed correctly.
  • Lead preventative maintenance and safety inspections at scheduled intervals.
  • Respond to road calls and emergencies as needed.

Job description

This position will perform routine and non-routine maintenance, diagnostic and repair work on vehicles (buses, vans etc.) which adheres to First Student standards. Performs work under minimal supervision. Handles more complex problems and can resolve independently. All work is performed with a commitment to safety. May mentor or provide informal guidance to other Technicians in the shop. Also, may act as a Shift Foreman and may receive a shift premium. In the state of Washington, this position is considered a safety-sensitive position and is therefore subject to drug and alcohol testing, including cannabis. $36.07/hr based on CBA

Major Responsibilities
  • Ensure vehicles are maintained and safe for our customers by performing limited repairs with minimal supervision on both basic and complex maintenance such as replacement of light bulbs, fuses, lenses, wiper blades, belts, hoses, batteries, check fluid levels, change fluids and filters and lubricate components.
  • Perform mechanical repairs under minimal supervision including the repair of brakes and brake inspections, engine tune-ups, suspensions, drive trains, transmission clutches and other repairs.
  • Maintain records of all maintenance work completed on vehicles including parts and supplies used.
  • Ensure that work orders are completed properly and accurately.
  • Maintain parts usage records and order repair parts from designated suppliers.
  • Diagnoses and performs accurately all phases of vehicle and equipment repair under minimal supervision.
  • May perform diagnostic tests utilizing a computer and manufacturer’s software to determine mechanical defects.
  • Lead preventative maintenance (PM’s), safety maintenance inspections and annual maintenance inspections at prescribed intervals of time and usage
  • Remove, overhaul and reinstallation of mechanical components with minimal Tech in Charge supervision
  • Notify supervisor of potentially dangerous equipment and corrective action taken
  • Evaluates completed work prior to release and seeks approval where required
  • Leads road calls and emergency services as necessary
  • Adhere to FirstGroup standards, policies and procedures
  • Moves vehicles safely between job and work area
  • Repair and maintain all shop equipment
  • Other responsibilities as requested or required
Minimum Education or Certifications Required
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred; vocational or technical certification in vehicle repair (preferred)
  • Class B CDL with passenger endorsement required (or expected within 3 months of hire)
  • State inspection license (if required)
  • ASE Certification preferred.
  • Must participate in ASE testing program (expected to have 6 ASE within 6 months of hire)
Minimum Experience or Skills Required
  • Advanced mechanical aptitude and 5 years of automotive or diesel repair experience (preferred) or equivalent education and experience
  • Adhere to standards set by state DOT for motor vehicle inspections and safety standards
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Advanced problem-solving ability
  • Advanced computer skills
  • Comfortable using hand tools
  • Excellent customer service skills and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Maintain an organized shop and clean work environment
  • Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of the job
  • Making sure vehicles are maintained and safe for our customers
  • Possess adequate mechanic tool inventory to complete all assigned duties and maintained in a clean and safe manner
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Maintenance Shop environment with dust, dirt and grease conditions
  • Ability to work under all weather conditions
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds
  • Ability to work in a crouched position or on back, lying on mechanic’s creeper, beneath motor vehicle equipment
