Job summary

Colonial Group in Irving, TX is seeking a Diesel Technician to service and repair trucking and rail equipment at customer sites or in the shop. You will diagnose engines, hydraulics, brakes, transmissions, and electrical systems to ensure equipment runs to manufacturer specs.

The role requires 5+ years in medium to heavy-duty vehicle repair, a HS diploma or GED, and the ability to read precision instruments. You must be willing to travel 100% to customer sites and maintain safety compliance.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 5+ years' experience in medium-heavy duty vehicle repairs (PMs, diagnostics, brakes, fuel systems, powertrain, aftertreatments).

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair diesel engines, electric motors, transmissions, brakes and electrical systems.
  • Perform safety-compliant maintenance and routine servicing.
  • Block, chock and secure equipment; disassemble for major repairs as needed.
  • Record maintenance and repair work in a timely manner.
  • Provide technical support to team members and supervise skill development.
  • Travel to customer sites or work in the company shop; maintain safety compliance with DOT/OSHA.

Job description

POSITION PURPOSE:

The Diesel Technician performs service and repairs on trucking and rail transportation equipment at customer sites or in the company’s shop to ensure that equipment continues to run according to manufacturer’s specifications. Ensures all Briggs Industrial Solutions standards are adhered to and executed consistent with company direction.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  1. Diagnose and repair equipment, to include diesel engines, electric motors, transmissions, drive axles, differentials, hydraulic systems, brake systems, steering systems, electrical systems, lifting systems, etc.
  2. Perform all work as directed in a safe and efficient manner, complying with all applicable performance, maintenance and safety regulations
  3. Per the Company’s safety guidelines, properly block, chock and chain equipment, and disassemble equipment as needed to facilitate major component removal and repair
  4. Perform routine and operational maintenance to ensure that equipment continues to run according to manufacturer’s specifications
  5. Perform advanced diagnostic troubleshooting and failure analysis on all components and systems
  6. Perform equipment inspections to identify potential problems and safety concerns
  7. Perform basic welding as necessary
  8. Record maintenance and repair work performed by completing necessary documentation / communications in a timely manner
  9. Complete based and advanced technical training and certifications as assigned
  10. Maintain parts and supplies needed for job completion
  11. Act as a technical resource and provide support for team members as needed. Conduct skill evaluations and support the development of team members.
  12. Maintain company vehicle cleanliness and ensure vehicle is in safe operating condition. Complete vehicle checklist as required.
  13. Maintain compliance with required safety practices and with applicable federal, state and local regulations, to include DOT and OSHA regulations
  14. Maintain a Safety First culture & participate in all safety meetings
  15. Assist Service leadership in recruiting efforts to ensure top talent is onboarded into the Company
  16. Perform other related duties as assigned.
minimum qualifications
Basic Knowledge & Competencies:
  • Excellent customer service, verbal / written communication skills
  • Thorough knowledge of all equipment & operations that apply to the branch
  • Ability to utilize computer to read codes, search/read instructions and complete documentation
  • Excellent mechanical aptitude, technical knowledge and problem solving skills
  • Desire to learn new technology, advanced diagnostics and repair procedures
Previous Experience/Education:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required
  • Mechanical or trade school certificate preferred
  • 5+ years’ experience in medium to heavy-duty vehicle repairs to include: PMs, trouble-shooting, computer diagnostics, brake systems, fuel systems, engine / powertrain components, aftertreatments, transmissions and tire/wheel
  • Ability to read precision instruments such as micrometers, dial indicators, bore gauges, etc.
  • Welding and/or fabrication skills and/or experience preferred
  • Valid driver’s license required
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Standing, walking, lifting, twisting and bending on a frequent basis
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds
  • Must furnish own tools
  • Availability to work 24/7 on-call schedule as needed
  • 100% travel to customer sites / working in a shop environment
