Job summary

Van Wall Equipment invites applicants to join its Green Iron Academy, a paid four-month hands-on development program for mechanically inclined individuals seeking a rewarding career as an agricultural equipment Diesel Technician.

Participants will gain the knowledge to become John Deere Certified Technicians and transition into a full-time Diesel Technician role at a sponsoring Van Wall Equipment dealership after graduation.

Qualifications

  • Three years of full-time work in a related field is preferred.
  • HS diploma or GED required; trade school or military training ok.
  • Desire to pursue a long-term career as an Agricultural Equipment Diesel Technician.
  • Demonstrated reliability, safety focus, and commitment to development.
  • Mechanical aptitude with interest in diagnostics and repair.
  • Ability to use computers and dealership software for training materials and records.
  • Willingness to learn and apply technical concepts hands-on.
  • Desire to support customers and ensure their satisfaction.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, work independently and in a team.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs and travel up to 10%.

Responsibilities

  • Participate actively in classroom training at Boone, IA training facility and manufacturer-led programs.
  • Learn from instructors and experienced technicians to gain hands-on service skills.
  • Complete John Deere University courses and certification requirements.
  • Develop knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems and tractors.
  • Learn to use John Deere service manuals, diagnostic software and tools.
  • Perform preventative maintenance inspections and basic repairs under supervision.
  • Assist with diagnostics, troubleshooting, removal and reconditioning of components.
  • Attend additional training after graduation and follow safety policies.
  • Maintain an organized, clean, and professional work area; collaborate with peers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • -Participate actively and consistently in classroom training at our Boone, Iowa Training Facility, manufacturer‑led training programs, and ongoing dealership development opportunities
  • -Learn from instructors, experienced technicians, and mentors to gain hands‑on experience in equipment service and repair
  • -Successfully complete all assigned classroom assignments, John Deere University online courses, and certification requirements
  • -Develop working knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, precision agriculture technology, power trains, air conditioning systems, and any other curriculum offered through this program
  • -Learn proper use of John Deere service manuals, technical information systems, diagnostic software, and specialty tools
  • -Perform preventative maintenance inspections and basic service repairs under supervision
  • -Assist with diagnostics, troubleshooting, removal, disassembly, and reconditioning of equipment components
  • -Attend additional training opportunities as required after graduation from Green Iron Academy
  • -Follow all safety policies and procedures while performing work assignments in the classroom or during on‑the‑job training
  • -Maintain an organized, clean, and professional work area
  • -Collaborate with peers on projects, assignments, and tasks
  • -Any other job duties as assigned
Position Qualifications
  • -Minimum of three (3) years of full‑time work experience in a profession similar to a diesel mechanic or experience in a trade, manufacturing, trucking, construction, automotive, or related field
  • -High School Diploma or GED required. Associate's degree, trade school experience, military technical training, or prior mechanical experience preferred but not required
  • -Desire to pursue a long‑term career as an Agricultural Equipment Diesel Technician working on John Deere products and equipment
  • -Demonstrated history of reliability, strong work ethic, safety focus, teamwork, and commitment to professional development
  • -Mechanical aptitude and genuine interest in diagnosing and repairing equipment
  • -Ability to utilize computers and dealership software to access training materials, maintain records, review equipment information, receive and share information, and support daily operations
  • -Past demonstrated experience learning technical concepts and applying them in a hands‑on environment
  • -Must possess a desire and passion to support customers and work to ensure their success and satisfaction
  • -Capability to communicate effectively with customers, coworkers, and management – verbally and in writing as required
  • -Ability to work independently and/or as part of a team
  • -Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs. occasionally

  • -Ability to travel up to 10% as required
  • -Valid driver's license required the ability as well to be deemed “insurable” by the company’s insurance carrier
