Title: BUS MECHANIC (SCHOOL CALENDAR YEAR - DAY/EVENING SHIFT) (OCCASIONAL WEEKENDS)

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district serving approximately 22,000 students, with over 60 languages spoken at home. KCKPS includes Sumner Academy, ranked #6 nationally for high schools and #1 in Kansas by US News.

Our district comprises Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools. It is the fifth largest in Kansas, with a student population that is approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian. The district employs about 4,000 staff, including over 1,800 teachers.

Job Goal:

The Mechanic's role involves providing mechanical services, identifying repair needs, performing repairs and preventive maintenance, ensuring project completion according to standards, and assisting colleagues. The role requires effective use of technology and other related duties.

Essential Functions:

  • Assist Lead Mechanic to meet departmental objectives and regulations.
  • Diagnose vehicle malfunctions to determine repairs or replacements.
  • Fabricate parts needed for repairs.
  • Inspect vehicles for safety and operational condition.
  • Maintain records of repairs, costs, warranties, etc.
  • Keep tools, equipment, and shop area organized and safe.
  • Perform minor bodywork to maintain vehicle appearance and safety.
  • Conduct routine vehicle maintenance such as oil changes and tire rotations.
  • Repair vehicle systems like engines, transmissions, hydraulics, etc.
  • Respond to roadside calls for emergency repairs.
  • Assist with snow/ice removal around buses.
  • Clean vehicles inside and out.
  • Attend safety and in-service meetings.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively.
  • Willingness to work flexibly with others.
  • Knowledge of gas, diesel, and CNG vehicles.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with medium/heavy trucks or school buses.
  • Valid CDL Class A/B with air brakes and School Bus Endorsement.
  • Electronic training and engine experience.
  • Ability to perform related duties for efficient operation.

Additional Info:

Maintains communication with school staff and uses technology effectively. Must solve practical problems, interpret instructions, and communicate clearly. The physical and environmental demands include working in loud environments and performing physical tasks. Terms: 261 days, Level 16, Hourly, Non-exempt, Reports to Director of Transportation. Performance evaluated per district policy. Applications reviewed before closing date.
