JOB OVERVIEW

The Diesel Service Mechanic at Tri-State Tree Service maintains and repairs our specialized fleet of tree service equipment including bucket trucks, chippers, stump grinders, and heavy diesel machinery. This skilled position requires expertise in diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and specialized tree equipment. Work in a well-equipped facility supporting critical tree care operations while ensuring peak fleet performance and safety compliance.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintenance & Repair

Diagnose and repair diesel engines, transmissions, brake systems, and hydraulic components

Perform preventive maintenance inspections and emergency field repairs

Conduct comprehensive diagnostic tests and interpret results for effective solutions

Test drive and operationally verify all repaired equipment for safety and performance

Advanced Technical Work

Troubleshoot complex electrical systems, computerized controls, and diagnostic software

Repair and maintain specialized tree equipment: aerial lifts, chippers, stump grinders

Perform engine rebuilds, transmission overhauls, and hydraulic system repairs

Conduct DOT inspections and ensure compliance with safety regulations

Shop Operations

Maintain detailed service records and parts inventory documentation

Order and install replacement parts for specialized equipment

Keep shop areas organized, manage tools and diagnostic equipment

Collaborate with crew leaders on equipment modifications and performance improvements

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Required

3+ years diesel mechanic experience with heavy equipment or commercial vehicles

Advanced knowledge of diesel engines, electrical systems, and hydraulic components

Proficiency with diagnostic software and computerized repair equipment

Valid driver's license with clean driving record

Ability to read technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic codes

Essential Skills

Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities under pressure

Experience with mechanical and electrical power tools

Excellent attention to detail and quality workmanship standards

Effective communication and collaboration with field crews and management

Computer skills for diagnostic systems and record-keeping

Physical ability to lift heavy components and work in various weather conditions

Preferred Qualifications

Vocational training in diesel mechanics or ASE certifications

Tree service equipment experience (chippers, aerial lifts, stump grinders)

DOT inspection certification

Hydraulic system repair experience

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Pay: Competitive hourly rate based on experience | Schedule: M-F, 8-hour shifts | Hours: 40/week

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Modern service facility with specialized diagnostic tools and equipment. Indoor/outdoor work areas with occasional fieldwork at job sites. May require emergency repairs outside regular hours during storm response or high-demand seasons.
