Job summary

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in diesel technology or equivalent trade certification.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience as a mechanic in a shop or fleet maintenance environment.
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and acceptable MVR.
  • FMCSA-required certifications for fleet mechanics.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues on fleet vehicles and equipment.

About Your Role

As a Diesel Mechanic, you will be responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing diesel-powered fleet vehicles and equipment. This role ensures that all vehicles operate safely and efficiently while adhering to FMCSA regulations and company standards. The diesel mechanic is skilled in troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and detailed repair documentation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Assist with other duties as assigned.

  • Fleet Maintenance & Repair: Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues on fleet vehicles, including engines, transmissions, brakes, and hydraulics, ensuring timely and effective repairs to minimize downtime and ensure peak operational performance.
  • Preventive Maintenance & Compliance: Conduct scheduled inspections, oil changes, tire rotations, and component replacements, ensuring all services meet FMCSA and DOT standards while maintaining accurate service and repair records.
  • Safety & Regulatory Adherence: Perform repairs and maintenance in compliance with OSHA, DOT, and company safety regulations. Maintain certifications for FMCSA-required inspections and uphold all safety protocols in daily operations.
  • Diagnostic Expertise: Utilize diagnostic tools, precision instruments, and shop equipment to identify and resolve mechanical issues efficiently, ensuring minimal vehicle downtime.
  • Recordkeeping & Communication: Document all maintenance work and repairs accurately, communicate vehicle issues and solutions effectively, and collaborate with the maintenance team to ensure seamless operations.
  • On-Site & Field Support: Provide roadside assistance and offsite repairs as needed, demonstrating flexibility and urgency in resolving vehicle malfunctions to support business operations.
  • Equipment Installation & Upgrades: Assist in installing new parts and systems on trucks and heavy equipment, performing modifications as needed, and collaborating with third-party vendors when outsourcing specialized work.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Work closely with plant operations, fleet team, and other team members to address equipment needs, share technical expertise, and proactively identify opportunities for process improvements.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • The position does not have any regular responsibility for overseeing or supervising the work of other team members.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in diesel technology or equivalent trade certification
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience as a mechanic in a shop or fleet maintenance environment.
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
  • Must hold FMCSA-required certifications for fleet mechanics.
  • Brake Inspector, Annual Inspector
  • T Series ASE Certifications preferred
  • Proficiency with diagnostic software, service manuals, and technical publications.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and on-call shifts as needed.
Working Conditions
  • The work environment is the typical plant or shop environment. The employee must complete their work satisfactorily in an environment where there are significant distractions, including staff, clients, and vendors walking through and conversing, telephones ringing, conversations carrying over, loud noises, and interruptions to answer questions from others. This position may be exposed to chemicals, extreme weather conditions such as heat, cold, and wind.
