Job summary

Iowa Department of Transportation is seeking a Mechanic to maintain and repair trucks and heavy equipment. You’ll troubleshoot using diagnostic tools, conduct preventive maintenance, and document repairs to ensure reliability for snow removal and other essential operations.

The role requires a CDL with air brake endorsements and a pre-employment physical, with on-call duties during emergencies. Residency within commuting distance is expected, with a standard Monday–Friday schedule.

Qualifications

• Three years of full-time work experience in automotive or heavy equipment mechanic work.
• CDL with air brake endorsements required within 6 months of hire.
• Pre-employment physical and drug screening as part of safety program.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, brakes, and electrical components for trucks and heavy equipment.
• Use diagnostic tools and maintenance software to troubleshoot issues and document repairs.
• Perform proactive preventative maintenance on snowplows, dump trucks, loaders, and other vehicles.
• Respond to equipment breakdowns, identify root causes, and implement repairs to minimize downtime.
• Maintain accurate service records for compliance and history tracking.
• Operate snow-removal equipment to keep roadways safe.
