Job summary

The State of Iowa - Executive Branch invites applications for a Diesel Mechanic with the Iowa DOT. You will service trucks and heavy equipment, diagnose issues with modern tools, and perform preventative maintenance in a safety‑minded team environment.

Expect a Monday–Friday 7:00 AM–3:30 PM schedule with on‑call duties during emergencies. CDL permit and Class A CDL with endorsements are required within five months of hire, and residency close to Tipton is required.

Qualifications

• Three years of full‑time work experience in automotive or heavy equipment mechanic work.
• CDL permit upon hire; Class A CDL with endorsements within five months of hire.
• Residency within a 45‑minute commute to the Tipton Maintenance Garage within five months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, brakes, and electrical components for trucks and heavy equipment.
• Use diagnostic tools and maintenance software to troubleshoot issues and document repairs.
• Perform preventative maintenance on snowplows, dump trucks, loaders, and other vehicles.
• Respond to breakdowns, identify root causes, and implement repairs to minimize downtime.
• Maintain detailed service records for compliance and history tracking.
• Operate snow-removal equipment to clear roadways.
